A good idea

EVG reader 8E shares the above photo... someone created a "Make me a Park" sign on the fence that surrounds the empty DEP lot on Fourth Street between the Bowery and Lafayette... anyone know what the purpose of this lot is for?

It seems to have something to do with the construction of the new water tunnel for NYC, a mega project that will take decades to complete. I think there is access into the tunnel from this lot. At earlier stages of the work it was more obvious what it was being used for.

"The lot on East Fourth Street and Bowery — was turned over to the Department of Environmental Preservation in the 1990s for work on shafts connected to the massive underground network of tunnels that supply the city's drinking water.

As a condition of DEP's taking control of the sites, agreements were struck in writing that promised that when the agency finished the work on the shafts, the lots would be turned into public parks."

Whoever took this picture left off what's written to the right of "park", which is: "...ing lot".

Wasn't there supposed to be a high rise built here? I remember a big to-do about the construction affecting the Merchants House Museum structure or was that the space to the west of the museum where the hot dog carts are housed?
I'd love a park but empty is better than another high rise.
