14th St. Lotto & Magazine has closed

Yesterday was the last day in business for the convenient store at 430 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and First Avenue.

An EVG reader, who shared the above photo, passed along the news. A clerk at the store said that they were moving uptown. He declined to say why they were leaving the neighborhood.

Perhaps it's due to the decrease in foot traffic along this corridor in recent years. The store is directly next door to the former Peter Stuyvesant Post Office, where a residential building is in the works.

This PO branch closed almost three years ago to the date in 2014.

A clerk told me yesterday the landlord had not renewed the lease. He attributed the construction site at the site of the former post office next door for the decline in business.

Thank you for your coverage!

Bad omen for the residents in the building above. I will miss getting the NYT, rizlas, and the odd lotto ticket here.

Now that a fancy building is going up next door, all of those small shops are going to get the boot. The landlords are going to want to replace them with more upscale businesses. It's sad but not surprising.

Absentee landlord and unhelpful management. They want everyone out to renovate the buildings or demolish.

NO! I was just there twice last weekend. The owners and family were lovely and would always tolerate me and my incessant chatting about the state of today's fashion magazines (spoiler alert: they all suck) as I bought two anyway along with incense and keychains and gum.

I am so sorry to hear this. I will miss them and wish them all the best in the future.
