M2M has closed for now on 3rd Avenue; new storefront coming 2 blocks away

As we reported, M2M was closing on Third Avenue at 11th Street at the end of the business day yesterday.

This morning, the owners of the Asian market put up signage with an announcement about their new East Village location ...

As you can see, M2M will eventually be moving two blocks to the south ... to the long-empty spaces in the retail strip of NYU's Alumni Hall...

The corner space was home to Birdbath Bakery until the summer of 2014. Next door, Citi Habitats moved out in June 2014. No word how many of these storefronts M2M will take. There are two other empty slots that the Subway sandwich shop and Saint's Alp Teahouse previously rented.

As for the former M2M space, Wagamama, the London-based chain of Japanese restaurants, is coming here soon. Before M2M opened in 2002, the storefront housed an OMG jeans outlet.

For now you can get your M2M fix at their Waverly Place store.

Thanks to Steven for the photos!

Great news. I rarely shop there but they are an EV asset. The array of product on their shelves is dazzling. It's like being on an MSG high. Whooo, man!

That's great news! Especially after losing the EV Cheese store across the street, we needed some good news around here. And they can always move back to ther old space when that chain sushi restaurant goes bust in a few years. Im predicting it now and putting Wagamama on the Deathwatch -- just like the Gap and 7-11 and Pizzeria Uno found out the hard way, the EV is not very friendly to a lot of chain stores.

Super news indeed! They'll be even closer to me. I love the unique selection at M2M. Glad they've held their own since Westside Market opened. As for Wagamama, it's not sushi. It's a London institution serving ramen, soba and teppanyaki that I fell in love with more than 10 years ago. Not the EV needs another noodle place, and sorry M2M was displaced, but I'll be a Wagamama regular.

YAY for m2m staying very close by! I'm sad that NYU will profit from their tenancy, but truly glad m2m will still be here.

I will be there with bells on when they re-open at their new location!

Hope they got a good deal on their lease. Some of that space has been vacant for a long-ass time. They are lucky to get M2M, a cool interesting grocery.

Seems too close to competitor Sunrise Mart. A location further south (closer to Houston St) might have made more sense.

Giovanni,
the EV cheese shop moved to 80 E 7th street (between 1st & 2nd ave). not as big a store but the same good pricing and all the cheeses.

There's an Asian grocery store now on 3rd Ave between 18th & 19th now actually! Yay!

Late November 2017, no sign of M2M moving into the new space. :-(
