On Avenue A, a flower replaces armpit-sniffing photo of Mariah Carey

FINALLY! Since I can remember, Luster Photo on Avenue A between Seventh Street and St. Mark's has had this stupid photo of Mariah Carey in the window. The one in which she's sort of sniffing the armpit and showing off the hair extensions. Why do they have this photo in the window? What does she have to do with the East Village? This is just embarrassing. Back when the store was on Avenue B near 10th Street, they at least had a Lou Reed photo in the window. (Nothing against Luster... it's just that photo!)

But! No more! The store has changed the photo in the front window.

For now, we will savor this moment....

I never understood the Mariah photo either. Glad it's gone. Hope it's in the trash where it belongs.

They were both probably just the nicest misprints/no shows the store had laying around

I've always kind of liked the Mariah print, despite not being a fan of the woman herself. She looks fresh and pretty and I like how out of place it is with the rest of the block. The flower is kinda generic. Like an iPhone wallpaper.

I'm sure this makes me an idiot. Oh well.

Good point on the new image being so generic, Erin... And it is awfully suburban looking... They could use the space to highlight the work of a local photographer... change it up every few weeks or month or so. Make it a little more about the community.

EVG - the print shop on 10th Street, between Centosette and Chikalicious, also had a pretty amazing Michael Jackson t-shirt - but sad to say, this too has been taken down (or sold to some MJ superfan.)

I kinda got used to the Mariah print too, even though I don't listen to her music. I always assumed that it was just a sample of their professional output (feiry printer or whatnot), and those prints are probably a bit expensive to run.

But if it was my business, I'd change it up every couple of months or so. That Lou Reed print was awesome.

I felt the same way about he Mariah photo, too, until one day I looked at the credit and saw that the photographer was my downstairs neighbor. So they were keeping it local. Not sure about the waterlily.

I thought Mariah was kind of a crazy photo, but it ended up being a pretty good landmark for people who just can't handle the grid system. You couldn't help but notice her. "2 blocks south of Mariah Carey" would always get people where the needed to be.

@ anon 2:25 ... I see... didn't realize this was a local photographer's work...

Before Mariah was spanning the window pane, we had that b/w bulldog there. But that's a while ago, and I ask myself: Does this elephantous memory make me a neighborhood staple now?

Had no idea that was Mariah.
Now I hated it.
