How a fruit vendor helped save a bike on First Avenue

Dave on 7th shared this anecdote from yesterday... the incident occurred on First Avenue just north of 14th Street... A DOT crew removed a street sign. A bicycle happened to be attached to the sign. The crew was ready to just leave the bike chained to itself on the sidewalk.

However! A fruit vendor down the block intervened and convinced the crew to reattach the bike to a lamp post near his cart.

This happened to my friend's bike two winters ago...DOT removed the parking sign where his bike was chained and left his bike on the street up for grabs. Thankfully, a doorman from across the street saw what happened, rescued the bike, and left a note for the owner. Not only were the city workers careless in leaving the bike unsecured, but they also caused about $250 worth of damage to it while they were removing the sign. I was shocked at their carelessness but very thankful to know that there are good neighbors in the EV who look out for one another.

Has anyone else heard of this happening? Knowing that this has happened at least twice, I'm tempted to call 311 to complain.

It's Illegal to chain your bike to street signs in NYC. Both cases these people are lucky that they not only had people save their bikes for them, but that they also weren't fined

Legal or illegal, isn't it still wrong for the city to damage and discard someone's personal property?
