The burger chain, which started in Washington, D.C., in the 1980s, now has 1,700 outposts worldwide, including 30-plus locations around NYC.
Five Guys takes over the space from Strings Ramen, which closed in April 2022 after two years in business, opening just before the start of the pandemic. (Signage remained up for Strings, giving the impression they were still in business.)
As previously noted, the restaurants at 188 Second Ave. haven't fared well since old-timer Shima got rent-hiked out of here in January 2014. Lumos Kitchen lasted three months in 2018. Others to make quick departures in the past five years were Hot Pot Central, DumplingGuo and Dumpling Go.
Thank you to everyone who sent photos from yesterday, including Choresh Wald.

Their burgers are the most over cooked possoble.
agree with @7:31, plus very expensive. Fries are good though, always order the small/JR size cuz they usually dump a bunch in the bag as extra.
The burgers are overcooked but I will always have a soft spot for them for the malt vinegar they have for the fries in-store.
Ew, no thanks. Wish it was another ramen shop. Place is getting flooded with fast food joints to cater to the drunk crowds.
From Shima to this? We're on one big downward slide...
I dunno if overcooked is even the problem. I don't think I could prepare meat of any better. Yikes.
I look forward to feeding their staff for the next 8-10 months. 🥯
preferred Shake Shack, but still happy for a burger joint. Nowhere to get that down here- even the irish bar just opened doesnt offer burgers!!
we also need an old style genuine greek DINER
Still miss Shima and that unique jalapeno sauce they served with sushi.
