The Hamilton Fish Park Library at 415 E. Houston St. between Pitt and Columbia is set to close for "building improvements" through the end of 2026.
I stopped by and talked with managing librarian Brandon Korosh (below in the middle) ...
Korosh said that the $19-million gut renovation will include a new open concept with floor-to-ceiling windows for better lighting... workers will also strip the back wall to allow light through the (currently painted) panes.
The library was previously closed for two-plus years due to an "aging HVAC system," which will be replaced during this renovation.

Why was it reopened if this "aging HVAC system" is still in place? This makes no sense. If the existing HVAC system is still there, then why was it closed for 2 years in the first place? And why couldn't they start this reno then?
NYPL: Make it make sense for our kids. There are several schools that rely on this library. Our kids are only kids for so long...
Our mayor would rather spend millions on unnecessary NYPD overtime than on our libraries. That’s the real “make it make sense” question.
Former Mayor deBlasio was in office when Hamilton Fish Library originally closed. It’s easier to close a library & save money due to budget cuts and blame the closure on another problem/ reason. (And hope no one realizes that the library was closed to budget cuts.) Does the $19 million come from a capital projects fund? When was that money allocated and by whom? The lack of timing is astounding when It’s middle of a school year and East River Park is a destruction/construction site. Where are children supposed to hang out?
