Gem Spa will not reopen

After a turbulent 12 months (and weeks of rumors), Gem Spa has officially announced that it will not reopen on the corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place.

Parul Patel, who has been running the store that her father Ray has owned since 1986, made a gallant effort in recent months to save the iconic corner shop that dates to the 1930s. However, whatever financial progress she was able to make was not enough to overcome a global pandemic.

Gem Spa released this statement this afternoon:

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce Gem Spa has poured it’s last legendary egg cream and closed its doors forever.

This has been an extremely difficult decision, and one we are heartbroken to make. Forced to close the store due to New York City & State Covid restrictions implemented six weeks ago in the interest of safety to our customers and staff, we had hoped to reopen once things stabilized. Prior to the crisis, it had become increasingly apparent that the evolving character of the area was no longer able to sustain a corner creation like ours.

Coronavirus concerns closed our city, cratered businesses, and ultimately sealed the fate of our (close to) 100-year-old shop.

After careful review and assessment of our options, we have made the heartbreaking but necessary decision to close permanently.

We have enjoyed the most incredible love, support, loyalty and friendship from our neighbors, city, and visitors from around the world. We are, and always will be, eternally grateful to the historical artists, musicians, designers and dedicated denizen’s who saw us as much more than a beloved bodega but an iconic East Village institution.

Although our physical doors are closing, we will live on through our website where we will be highlighting more of our rich history and the iconic figures that have made us who we are. We will also continue to sell Gem Spa branded merchandise as well as art, books and photographs inspired by our store.

The Patel family would like to thank everyone for all the beautiful memories and for the opportunity to serve you. We hope that all of you are staying safe and in good health. Lots of love from all of us to all of you."

The combination of troubles started late last spring, when Gem Spa lost their license to sell cigarettes and tobacco products — a large source of revenue. (A now-former employee reportedly sold cigarettes to an undercover minor.) In addition, their lottery license was suspended last spring for an outstanding debt.

Gem Spa also stopped selling newspapers and magazines, a dwindling revenue source and a marked shift in consumer behavior.

Patel, who launched an Instagram account that emphasized the corner shop's long East Village history and well-liked egg creams, also saw success with the introduction of branded Gem Spa streetwear.

Supporters came together last September for a successful cash mob, which also helped raise awareness of the shop and the ongoing plight of the mom-and-pop business surviving in today's corporatized NYC.

In early March, Patel began to put in a small lunch counter with retro stools as a way to expand Gem Spa's coffee and tea service. However, before the counter could be utilized, Gem Spa closed amid the COVID-19 crisis — this after introducing a delivery service for egg creams.

At the time of the closure, Gem Spa was trying to raise $35,000:

"...to make up for the $12,000 we were short for rent that was due March 15 and another $20,500 (combination of rent, taxes, monthly payment plan from a recent lawsuit settlement) due in 3 weeks (April 15th). And the other $2500 is needed for taxes. The lawsuit that we recently settled basically stipulates that the landlord can evict us if we are late twice on rent. We are already late for last week’s rent and if we are late one more time, we will be legally evicted when the moratorium is lifted."

Gem Spa is closed for now

Gem Spa is now closed indefinitely on the corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place. Owner Parul Patel had launched a delivery service for the shop's egg creams and other items during the COVID-19 crisis.

For now, Gem Spa's online store is up and running. If it's of interest, then you can support them here too.

Coffee time: New counter space coming to Gem Spa

Work started yesterday on new counter space inside Gem Spa, the corner shop on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place (thanks to Steven for the photos!) ...

With the incoming granite counter and retro stools, Parul Patel, who recently took over running the shop from her father Ray, is expanding Gem Spa's coffee and tea service and offering companion items like pastries, bagels and knishes. (FYI: the coffee will be from Porto Rico Importing Co.) You can also get one of their signature egg creams.

In addition to the counter service, Gem Spa continues to expand the merch line with some limited editions...

Hearts for Gem Spa

Earlier today, Hash Halper (aka @newyorkromantic) was spotted chalking hearts outside Gem Spa on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place... showing a little love for the corner shop that has had its financial struggles in recent months... (photos below by Steven)...

Schiti no more

On Thursday night, as Eden pointed out on Twitter, the "Schitibank" signage was removed from outside Gem Spa on the corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place.

The satirical advertisements for Schitibank arrived in September ahead of the Cash Mob for the shop, which has been struggling financially this past year. (The signage was only expected to be up through September. One piece of it remains behind.)

As you know, "Schitibank" was a play on Citibank, who was rumored to be interested in buying out the lease. (Citi has denied they had any interest in the storefront.) You can read more about the art installation that Tommy Noonan and Doug Cameron of the design firm DCX Accelerator created at Jeremiah's Vanishing New York.

Meanwhile, the shop, now run by owner Ray Patel's daughter Parul, is working toward profitability again. The financial turnaround has been aided by the sale of Gem Spa-branded hats and t-shirts.

And now, hoodies are available...

Positive signs for Gem Spa

The suspension period is up for cigarette sales at Gem Spa.

And yesterday, the corner shop on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place received their authorized certificate from the State to sell cigarettes and tobacco products again, a large source of revenue. (They lost their tobacco license back in the spring when a now-former employee sold cigarettes to an undercover minor.)

Now Parul Patel, who is running the store her father Ray has owned since 1986, is also hopeful to become a lottery retailer again. That license was revoked in the spring for an outstanding debt. According to Parul, she is working on an installment plan to pay off that amount in order to offer lottery sales (other big revenue source).

In an Instagram post earlier this week, she wrote:

Today marks the end of the suspension period for the cigarette and lotto licenses. While this is a wonderful milestone, we still have to go through the process of getting the licenses reinstated, pay off our debt and reach profitability.

Given the success of its branded T-shirts, Parul is adding to the shop's streetwear merchandising, as we previously reported.

We are going to be introducing a whole range of Gem Spa merchandise this week including long-sleeve tees, hoodies, beanies, tote bags and more as well as artwork, photography and books inspired by our store. Also we will be hosting a party in the next few weeks to help raise funds toward this end. It will be held at a hot downtown location and will be a fun-filled night of music, entertainment and of course egg creams!

Gem Spa expanding its product line

Given the success of its branded T-shirts, Gem Spa proprietor Parul Patel now plans to add to the shop's streetwear merchandising with the upcoming arrival of sweatpants, hoodies and long sleeve tees.

Yesterday she showed EVG contributor Stacie Joy the Gem Spa hat.

As previously reported, the corner store on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place as been struggling in recent months, in part due to its six-month ban (set to end soon) on selling cigarettes and lottery tickets.

With the cash mob on Sept. 14 and the interest in the Gem Spa T-shirts, Parul told Stacie that she is feeling optimistic at the prospects of getting through this rough patch.

Parul’s father, Ray, bought Gem Spa in 1986.

What 300 or so Gem Spa T-shirts look like

A shipment of 850 Gem Spa T-shirts arrived today... at Gem Spa on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place.

Steven took these shots. Parul Patel, who's running the shop these days, estimated that 300 were in these photos...

These are the T-shirts (a popular item now) that people pre-ordered BEFORE Sept. 23 either at the cash mob on Sept. 14 or via the store's PayPal account.

And only buy the shirts via Gem Spa. Apparently there is a black market Gem Spa operation out there!

Some sprkl for Gem Spa

East Village-based musician-artist Paul Kostabi has added his signature character Sprkl characters on the gates at Gem Spa...

Gem Spa is the latest Second Avenue business to get some sprkl ... joining Block Drugs and Cacio e Vino.

As for Gem Spa, the Schitibank signage that arrived ahead of last Saturday's cash mob will remain up here at St. Mark's Place until the end of the month, per Jeremiah Moss.

At the Gem Spa Cash Mob

On Saturday afternoon, friends and neighbors came together for a Cash Mob at Gem Spa on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place.

Organized by #SaveNYC and Jeremiah Moss, the effort was to help the struggling shop make up for some back rent and the temporary loss of its lottery and cigarette sales (a now-former employee was said to sell cigarettes to an undercover minor).

From noon to 2 p.m., a steady stream of customers came through the venerable shop to buy egg creams and put in an order for a Gem Spa T-shirt (a popular item now).

As previously noted, Gem Spa was adorned with signage and logos for "Schitibank," a play on Citibank, an alleged interested party in the space. (Citi denied they had any interest in the storefront.)

EVG contributor Stacie Joy was at Gem Spa and shared these photos (and find Jeremiah Moss' recap here) ...

And here's a look at some of the signage that Tommy Noonan and Doug Cameron of the design firm DCX Accelerator created pro bono for the event...

Reminders: Cash mob at Gem Spa today

From noon to 2 p.m. today (Sept. 14!), the folks at #SaveNYC are hosting a Cash Mob at Gem Spa — currently adorned as a "Schitibank" branch — on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place to help support the longtime business. Per the official invite:

Come prepared to spend some money — egg creams, pretzels, t-shirts, toothpaste! — and take your photo with a surprise work of guerrilla street art, as an acclaimed group of cultural activists and designers radically transform Gem Spa into a dystopian vision for the new St. Mark’s Place.

Maybe order an egg cream...

This is the latest act of kindness that neighbors have shown for the shop, which Parul Patel has been running for her ailing father Ray, the owner since 1986.

As we've been reporting in recent months, Gem Spa has been struggling of late, in part due to its temporary ban on selling cigarettes and lottery tickets as well as various landlord issues. (The ban ends in November.)

Gem Spa is now a 'Schitibank'

The down-but-not-out Gem Spa on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place has been transformed into a "Schitibank" — "A New concept bank, in New York's bohemian East Village," per the new signage. (Thanks to the EVG reader for the photo!)

A nice touch ahead of the #SaveNYC cash mob here Saturday (Sept. 14) from noon to 2 p.m.

There have been rumors that the landlord here is interested in a Citibank for this venerable corner. More background in the links below...

Updated 8:30 a.m.

Ah! Jeremiah Moss has much more on this "vivid dystopian vision of the new St. Mark's Place."

The Schitibank project features bohemian East Villagers — Jean-Michel Basquiat and Patti Smith (on Schitibikes), Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, Ted Berrigan, the New York Dolls, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Gem Spa's own Candy the Cat (smoking weed).

A cash mob Saturday at Gem Spa

As we've been reporting in recent months, Gem Spa has been struggling of late, in part due to its temporary ban on selling cigarettes and lottery tickets as well as various landlord issues.

On Saturday from noon to 2 p.m., the folks at #SaveNYC are hosting a Cash Mob at the shop on Second Avenue at St.

This is the latest act of kindness that neighbors have shown for the shop, which Parul Patel has been running for her ailing father Ray, the owner since 1986.

Here are some other ways that people have been helping out:

• St. Mark's Place resident David Godlis donated prints of a Madonna photo outside Gem Spa in 1984 during filming of "Desperately Seeking Susan." Postcards are available at the shop.

Kiehl’s donated lip balm that the shop is including with sales of Gem Spa t-shirts.

V and Paper gifted the shop copies of its magazines to sell at 50 percent off the cover price.

• More artists/photographers are donating work inspired by Gem Spa that will be available for sale at the shop.

Get your Gem Spa t-shirts or photos of Madonna — at Gem Spa!

Starting this evening (Friday!), Gem Spa will have a limited supply of Gem Spa t-shirts for sale at the shop here on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place.

In recent weeks, they've been filling orders for people who purchased them via PayPal. Now they'll have an extra supply on-hand. (The t-shirts come with a Kiehl’s lip balm that the company donated.)

As we've been reporting, the venerable shop has been struggling of late, in part due to its temporary ban on selling cigarettes and lottery tickets and various landlord issues.

Parul Patel, who is running the shop for her father Ray, the owner since 1986, decided to sell the t-shirts to help raise money for the shop.

Meanwhile, longtime St. Mark's Place resident David Godlis is pitching in to assist the longtime corner shop. He's donating prints of this photo of Madonna outside Gem Spa in 1984 during filming of "Desperately Seeking Susan" ... you can order various sizes of the photo at Gem Spa...

The Gem Spa Zoltar is alive and well and telling fortunes an L-train ride away in Bushwick

[Zoltar as seen in — sob — December]

In late May, Zoltar — everyone's favorite Animatronic Fortune Telling Machine — was removed from its post of nearly seven years outside Gem Spa on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place.

Unfortunately, as you may have sensed by now, this Zoltar will NOT be returning. The official word from Gem Spa: "The Zoltar machine was removed by its owner due to our scaled-back hours to prevent vandalism."

Turns out that this Zoltar remains in the five boroughs. We've had several reports of sightings of Zoltar in... Bushwick, specifically on Myrtle and Central Avenue. The photo below is from EV resident Grant showing Zoltar ready to ply his wisdom trade outside OMG Pizza ...

... and for further documentation...

We did compare the graffiti markings on the Gem Spa and the Bushwick Zoltar and can confirm the two are one in the same. While a move to Bushwick seems a little, oh, 2014, we hope that Zoltar is happy and can win over the new neighbors.

Zoltar first arrived at Gem Spa on Sept. 23, 2012. A tribute will follow here at a later date.
