Jiang Diner now in soft-open mode on 5th Street



Here's a little more information about Jiang Diner, which is now in a soft opening here at 309 E. Fifth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

According to their website: "Jiang Diner was founded with a mission to introduce authentic Xinjiang-styled Northwestern Chinese food and culture to New York City."

You can find their menu online here.



For now, Jiang's hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with a 3 p.m. opening on Saturday and Sunday.

The first sign of Japanese ramen shop Sanpoutei arrives at former Kabin space on 2nd Avenue



Renovations continue over at 92 Second Ave. between Fifth Street and Sixth Street ... where a small sign on the exterior reveals the new tenant — Sanpoutei Ramen...

Last fall, CB3 OK'd a beer-wine license (they were originally seeking full liquor) for the Sanpou Group, which operates 30 restaurants worldwide, including Sanpoutei Ramen, which started in Niigata, Japan, in 1967.

Reviews of the restaurant note that "Sanpoutei is defined by its authentic Niigata-style ramen, a shoyu-ramen in a clear fish stock-based broth."

Sanpoutei joins a crowded ramen market in the East Village... other recent arrivals include Tatsu Ramen on First Avenue ... and TabeTomo on Avenue A.

Kabin Bar & Lounge closed in March 2015 at this address. While there were a few potential suitors, the storefront has sat empty for four years.

Jiang Diner coming soon to 5th Street



An EVG reader shares these photos from 309 E. Fifth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue ... showing the signage in place for Jiang Diner, which, according to a quick exchange with a worker, will be a noodle bar...



Don't have any other information at the moment. This address was previously SobaKoh, which closed in July 2017.

Van Đa brings modern Vietnamese cuisine to 4th Street starting tonight



Van Đa makes it debut this evening over at 234 E. Fourth St. just west of Avenue B.

The project, from restaurateur Yen Ngo and Gramercy Tavern alum chef Hannah Wong, focuses on the food of Ho Chi Minh City, Hue and Hanoi.

Eater had a preview:

The duo is resisting traditional versions of pho or banh mi on the menu, with Ngo instead harking back to the food of her youth in Vietnam that she doesn’t often find here.

The menu is split into three sections of food from those three cities, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in south Vietnam; Hue, in the middle and which was once the royal capital of the country; and Hanoi up north. Ngo says that the food of central Vietnamese city Hue is very time-intensive and complex, though with gentle flavors, and she’s not seen many versions of it here. One example is shrimp and pork tapioca dumplings, which are made from tapioca flour and steamed in banana leaves. Dishes from other categories include stir-fried pho noodles and lemongrass beef tartare.

The two-level space has been several restaurants in recent years, most notably The Cardinal, the Southern-style restaurant from chef-owner Curtis Brown.

Chinese Graffiti now open at 171 Avenue A

In other new openings, Chinese Graffiti debuted last Friday at 171 Avenue A between 10th Street and 11th Street.

The restaurant, described as an Asian-American gastropub, is open for now from 5-11 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; until midnight Thursday-Saturday.

You can find some food shots on the Chinese Graffiti Instagram account here. No word at this moment who's behind this venture.

Recent restaurants here include Chao Chao, which closed without any notice to patrons in May 2017 after six months in business. Chao Chao evolved from Soothsayer, which opened in January 2016. Soothsayer, from the same operators, also closed without any notice to patrons at the end of September 2016.

And because someone will bring it up... No. 171 was once the onetime home of Rat Cage Records and 171A, the illegal club-turned-rehearsal studio that produced records by Bad Brains and the "Polly Wog Stew" EP by the Beastie Boys.

Coming soon signage spotted for Plado on 2nd Street



Renovations continue over at 192 E. Second St. between Avenue A and Avenue B. Yesterday, EVG regular Salim spotted the signage for the new occupant — Plado, a Mediterranean-themed small-plates restaurant ...



The owners here also operate Vite Vinosteria, an Italian restaurant/wine bar in Astoria.

According to their questionnaire at the CB3 website for a beer-wine license from last summer, Plado will have 19 tables to accommodate 75 diners as well as an eight-seat bar. Their proposed hours of operation are listed as 10 a.m. to midnight daily.

The previous tenant was the gay bar Stairs, which closed as quietly as it arrived. Until December 2013, the space was home for 18 years to Il Bagatto.

SMØR now serving Nordic fare on 12th Street



SMØR debuted this past week at 441 E. 12th St. just west of Avenue A. The cafe, "serving up reinvented Nordic classics," is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (they open at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday).

Their menu includes open-face rye sandwiches (smørrebrød!) with options including smoked salmon, pickled herring, roast beef and chicken salad... they have several breakfast items as well as coffee and tea. Find the full menu here.


SMØR is in one of the recently renovated storefronts off of Avenue A that includes a nail salon-spa...

KC Gourmet Empanadas debuts tomorrow (Saturday!) on Avenue B

KC Gourmet Empanadas its holding a grand opening tomorrow here at 38 Avenue B just north of Third Street... door signage notes that the festivities start at 11 a.m., and include a folklore group and Panamanian DJ...



Here's a description of the business:

KC Gourmet Empanadas menu is heavily inspired by dishes from Panama. Our intention is to serve a taste of Panama with great quality dishes to a wide variety of clientele. Our main dish is the ever so delicious empanada, it’s not any kind of empanada. At KC Gourmet Empanadas you’ll have a gourmet empanada with a Panamanian flair.


This space was previously the Dojo Noodle House.

Coming soon: Camellia on 3rd Avenue



Just a little to the north, on Third Avenue between 15th Street and 16th Street, signage is up for Camellia, which, per the signage, will serve a variety of ramen, gelato and drinks... no word on an opening date (the website listed on the signage isn't active yet).

Camellia takes the place of a Subway (sandwich shop) that shuttered a few years back.

Spicy Moon brings vegetarian szechuan to 6th Street



Spicy Moon has been in soft-open mode since Jan. 17 here at 328 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue in the former Zen 6 space. (The owners of Zen 6, a ramen spot, are also behind Spicy Moon.)

Per the restaurant's Instagram: "Spicy Moon is 100% Vegan and 100% devoted to serving our guests the best #plantbased flavors in NYC."

Mi Casa Latina debuts on 14th Street



Mi Casa Latina is now open at 250 E. 14th St., just west of the Colonel on the corner of Second Avenue.

The sidewalk chalkboard signage touts quick-serve a.m. items like coffee and muffins for the commuting crowd... the menu includes a variety of fresh juices and bowls of açaí ... there are also steam tables with daily lunch specials such as the pork and rice for $10...



No. 250 previously housed PokéVillage, which closed in March 2018 after 16 months in business.

Violet ready to roll out the grilled pizzas this week



Violet, a new restaurant by the Pizza Loves Emily Group and chef/owner Matt Hyland, is ready to debut this week at 511 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

The Violet website shows reservations starting on Thursday. (This after some friends/families previews.) Google also lists a Jan. 10 opening ... as do various social-media posts.

Matt Hyland and his wife-partner Emily Hyland reportedly went to "grilled-pizza mecca" Al Forno in Providence, R.I., on their first date while they attended Roger Williams University.

Here's more about Violet, named after the state flower of Rhode Island, via the restaurant website:

Hyland's menu focuses on grilled cuisine that pays homage to New England and Rhode Island's flavors and abundant fresh seafood.

The menu highlight, grilled pizzas, are inspired by his nostalgia for Al Forno in Providence, where he and Emily often ate while attending school in Rhode Island and his desire to fill the void of grilled pizza destinations in New York City. The pies grilled over a hybrid gas and wood grill featuring seasonal and innovative twists on classic toppings. Small plates with a focus on New England seafood favorites, and a rotating selection of fresh, house-made pastas round out the shareable menu.

The Hyland's opened Emmy Squared this past July on First Avenue at Fifth Street.

Violet's listed hours are 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday (closed Monday!) through Thursday, until 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

GG's had a three-year run at No. 511 before they turned over the space in December 2017.

Sushi by M opens on 4th Street



Sushi by M opened during the holidays over at 75 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery.

A small Omakase and hand roll bar is now in place inside the long-vacant retail space (previously the Postal Shipping Center) ... you can check out the Sushi by M Instagram account for more on their offerings and reservation info ...

TabeTomo debuts on Avenue A



That new ramen shop that we told you about last August is now in soft-open mode at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

Eater had a preview yesterday of TabeTomo:

Starting today, NYC will finally have a ramen shop where tsukemen is the star. Chef Tomotsugu Kubo’s new restaurant TabeTomo, opening today, will go all in on the dipping ramen in a petite space...

Kubo has credentials that make this opening promising. The chef previously worked at the Tokyo location of Tsujita and helped open the LA location of the ramen sensation, where the restaurant that has one of the longest waits in the city. Like TabeTomo, Tsujita specializes in tsukemen, a style where room temperature noodles are dipped into an ultra-hot, ultra-rich broth.

But Kubo’s NYC restaurant will be more upscale than Tsujita, he says. It has 24 seats and a 16-seat wood bar. Warm, low light provided by hanging lanterns, a brick accent wall, and wood throughout give the restaurant a romantic vibe.

In New York, Mr. Kubo says he will take up to 60 hours to simmer his broth to deep perfection. The noodles are thicker than garden-variety ramen, the better to sop up the soup, and additions like eggs, pork belly, spinach and dried seaweed can dress up the meal. Regular ramen bowls are also served. Donburi rice bowls topped with sashimi or fried chicken, among other options, are also on the lineup, along with appetizers like crisp chicken skin, braised pork belly, edamame and pickles. The focus of the room is a large counter with seating on three sides.

TabeTomo is offering a limited menu until its GRAND opening next Monday.

This is the second L.A. ramen transplant to venture into the East Village this year. Tatsu Ramen, with two locations in Los Angeles, opened its first NYC outpost in July at 167 First Ave.

Baci e Vendetta closed at 131 Avenue A in March after nearly 16 months in service. Nic Ratner, a partner in Baci e Vendetta, said that business for the Italian cafe wasn't sustainable with only a beer-and-wine license.

This space was the 10 Degrees Bistro until the fall of 2015 ... and the Flea Market Cafe before that.

Dim Sum Palace debuts on 2nd Avenue



Dim Sum Palace is now up and running under the sidewalk bridge in one of the storefront spaces at 59 Second Ave. between Third Street and Fourth Street.

We first spotted the signage for the restaurant back in March. As noted then, the owners also run two locations of Dim Sum Palace in Midtown.

You can find their fairly extensive menu here. Their hours are 11 a.m. to midnight daily.

CB3 OK'd a beer-wine license for them this month.

MaKiinNy is now open in the East Village Thai space on 7th Street



On Friday, MaKiinNy debuted at 32 E. Seventh St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square.

This is the former home of East Village Thai, which closed in July after 20-plus years in business. As EVG contributor Stacie Joy first noted, the owner's daughter was taking over the space for her own take on Thai cuisine here.

An EVG reader shared these photos from Saturday.

There are several rice and noodle options, such as the popular Thai dish khao mun gai ($10)...



The beverages include a Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee.

MaKiinNy is open Monday-Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then 5 to 9:30 p.m. They are closed Sundays. The interior includes a counter and several stools for eat-in dining.

Their delivery isn't set up just yet.

Dua Kafe, serving Albanian-American cuisine, now open on 14th Street



Dua Kafe is now up and running at 520 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B ... bringing a little homespun warmth to a block dominated by the impersonal chill of the EVGB retail-residential complex on either side of the address...



The menu, per the cafe's Instagram account, features Albanian-American cuisine with a variety of egg dishes and paninis ...





The hours don't appear to be set as the cafe remains in soft-open mode ... though regardless of the time, breakfast is served all day.

Biga NYC debuts on Clinton and Houston



Several EVG readers passed along word that a new pizzeria/Italian restaurant called Biga NYC opened last week on the southwest corner of Clinton and Houston. (H/T Stacie Joy and Nick!)



I don't recall seeing this address (293 E. Houston St.) on any recent CB3-SLA committee dockets for a new liquor license ... and the sidewalk signage currently notes BYOB...



Don't know too much about the operators at the moment ... they have an Instagram account, where you can see their style of pies...


Until early this year the space was home — since 2014 — to Ariel’s Latin Bistro.

1st sign of First Lamb Shabu on 14th Street



The storefront at 218 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue is starting to shape into the first Manhattan outpost of First Lamb Shabu, a Beijing-based hot pot chain with more than 300 locations in China.

As the Commercial Observer reported back in April, the company, which has a location in Flushing, signed a 10-year lease for the space with a $20,000-per-month rent.

The storefront has been empty for several years, ever since Dunkin' Donuts (DD!) decamped for a smaller space on the block in August 2015.

Alphabet Pizza and Deli setting up shop at 20 Avenue A



Alphabet Pizza and Deli is a new tenant for 20 Avenue A at Second Street. The coming-soon signage arrived late last week.

We noted back in July that workers were "TO INSTALL PIZZA OVEN AND DELI EQUIPMENT IN EXISTING STORE" (per the ALL-CAP DOB style) in this space.

This quick-serve business only accounts for part of the former Chase branch. There's still roughly three-fourths of the storefront available for another tenant.

Alphabet Pizza and Deli is a little more pedestrian (not a criticism or complaint!) than what had been envisioned for the address. In early 2016, the broker — one of many — for 20 Avenue A showed the potential here for more-upscale wine-bar and retail tenant action...

Of course with the remaining parcel of space, there's still the potential for rendering reality (though, honestly, probably not).

Chase vacated this storefront in November 2015. There were six or seven different brokers for the space in these past three years.
