SMØR now serving Nordic fare on 12th Street

SMØR debuted this past week at 441 E. 12th St. just west of Avenue A. The cafe, "serving up reinvented Nordic classics," is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (they open at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday).

Their menu includes open-face rye sandwiches (smørrebrød!) with options including smoked salmon, pickled herring, roast beef and chicken salad... they have several breakfast items as well as coffee and tea. Find the full menu here.

SMØR is in one of the recently renovated storefronts off of Avenue A that includes a nail salon-spa...

Reinvented pickled herring is just the thing that the neighborhood needed.

Ate there today. Delicious. A little pricey. Started by a couple of nice Danish kids from Brooklyn. Only drawback is there's no coffee after noon, since apparently the landlord requested that they don't compete with the dog coffeeshop in the same building.

Actually I need pickled herring, and I am the neighborhood. Just the "reinvented" part is of course millennial nonsense.

Although herring might be a unusual choice for American tastes, it does taste pretty good. Also, they have plenty of other types of sandwiches, including roast beef. There are vegetarian options too. It's a stylish, cool spot.
