January Christmas miracles: The holiday tree lights are back ON in Tompkins Square Park

EVG reader boxysean brings us this breaking news today:

The Christmas tree lights are on! It's a New Year's miracle!

The workers were talking about how they were changing the ballast.

As previously reported, the lights went dark several days before Dec. 25, and remained off the entire holiday season. It makes sense that they are working again on this Jan. 18.

Meanwhile, the mysterious hole near the tree remains in place, mysteriously.

Reader mailbag: A call to keep the lights on the holiday tree in Tompkins Square Park

EVG regular Jose Garcia writes in:

I've been wondering whether you think there might be any sympathy for keeping the holiday tree in Tompkins Square Park lit beyond the holiday season.

Not sure who (Parks Department?) is responsible for it but for me at least it's become something of a beacon of hope and the beauty of our neighborhood given the toxic political atmosphere.

I'm guessing it would be a matter of costs and also perhaps it would be unhealthy for the tree?

The lights usually remain illuminated until some time in February... like in 2009, it was Feb. 7... in 2014, it was Feb. 17.

It was pretty nice to see it lit up that one St. Patrick's Day.

Posts that I never got around to posting: The Holiday is now open seven days a week

Oops! Meant to post this about 6-7 weeks ago! In any event, good news. Cheesy promotions aside (and we understand you need to make some money), we're pleased that the Holiday is back on a seven-day-a-week schedule. After Stefan's death earlier this year, there were questions his family would even keep the bar going... Soon enough, the Holiday was open just on the weekends. Then, in April the bar expanded its hours to Wednesdays and Thursdays. So here's to a great place to drink Mondays and Tuesdays now... and any other day, really.

Holiday pop-up bar season underway with arrival of Miracle on Ninth Street

Miracle on Ninth Street — the Christmas inspired pop-up bar — opens tonight for the season at 649 E. Ninth St. at Avenue C. (Thanks to Vinny & O for the photos.)

This is the sixth year for Miracle on Ninth Street, which "embraces the Christmas spirit with holiday inspired cocktails created by Nicolas de Soto. The winter wonderland experience is complete with an abundance of garlands, Christmas lights, ribbons, candles and tinsel and Christmas Carols galore," per Facebook.

Before the holidays, this space is the Cabinet Bar, the latest entry in the Cocktail Kingdom kingdom, which includes Mace and Boilermaker.

Mace moved from here to a larger space at 505 E. 12th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B earlier this year. This former Double Wide space will gave its own holiday pop up starting next week.

There goes the Holiday Cocktail Lounge

Workers are cleaning out the space at 75 St. Mark's Place this afternoon, as this photo by EV Grieve reader David shows...

The bar closed back on Jan. 29. Robert Ehrlich, the founder of Pirate Brands, and Barbara Sibley, the owner of La Palapa next door, are teaming up to open a tavern-restaurant that serves staples such as fish-n-chips.

Sibley told Grub Street that they were "going to try to preserve as much of the history as possible."

East Village stories to watch in 2013, (Part 2)

New housing at the former Cabrini Center

[Dave on 7th]

Work continues at the former Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation on Avenue B and East Fifth Street. We've already seen the listings for the two retail spaces available here.

Some time this year we'll certainly see listings for the residential portion too, which might make for a rather delicate sell. After all, Cabrini was a nonprofit, 240-bed nursing home that provided health care for low-income elderly residents in the East Village. How do you spin the broker babble to make buying into a place where people were spending the last days of their lives desirable? Well, we'll find out soon enough...

David Schwimmer moves to East Sixth Street

Plenty of celebrity types move in and out around here and no one really cares. Daniel Craig, for instance. And then there is David Schwimmer, who is reportedly moving to the former site of a circa-1852 townhouse demolished prior to the area's landmarking.

Per the Post on Feb. 6, 2012:

Schwimmer, 45, snapped up the property for $4.1 million in 2010 — and the city Landmarks Preservation Commission send him notices on March 31 and May 27 of last year that it could get landmark status by the end of 2012, said commission spokeswoman Elisabeth de Bourbon.

But by September 2011, the building was gone, just four months after the city’s latest letter was sent to Schwimmer’s representatives.

So, just to spell this out, Schwimmer and/or his people knew that the building was under landmark consideration, yet they hurried and destroyed it anyway. (All perfectly legal though. So lay off!)

Then there has been the matter of some 18 month's worth of construction noise to understandably annoy the neighbors.

Which may have inspired people to write messages such as this on the plywood on the under-construction 6-floor mansion:

[I forget now who sent me this]

Welcoming a 7-Eleven to Avenue A

In recent weeks, we've seen signs of opposition against the incoming 7-Eleven on Avenue A and East 11th Street. First, someone carved "Fuck 7-11" into the sidewalk (twice) ... then we saw the anti-7-Eleven stickers ... and now... chalk signage on the sidewalk and crosswalks near the under-construction shop.

Meanwhile, workers are apparently getting testy, yelling at passersby who are taking photos from the very public street...

Residents will be meeting again soon to discuss the incoming 7-Eleven. We'll post those details later.

-----

New development for East 14th Street

As we reported in late November, eight parcels consisting of 222 Avenue A and 504 - 530 E. 14th St. (exclusing No. 520) were leased for a 99-year period by the respective owner to East Village 14 LLC.

As some point this year, we expect to see a few more stores shutter along here (not to mention the Blarney Cove) ... as well as learn just what the new landlord has in store for these eight parcels of land.

-----

A new bar-restaurant at the former Holiday Cocktail Lounge

The post-Stefan version of the Holiday Cocktail Lounge closed last Jan. 28. Barbara Sibley, the owner and chef of La Palapa next door, will eventually open a tavern-restaurant that serves staples such as fish-n-chips in the former Holiday space. She has said that she and her team will try to preserve as much of the history as possible.

Several longtime East Village residents have said that they are very optimistic about the new venture; that this will be good for the neighborhood. We're looking forward to seeing what transpires here.

We exchanged Facebook messages with Sibley back in November... she said work has been going slowly. Crews have been renovating the entire building, which Robert Ehrlich, the founder of Pirate Brands, purchased.

This isn't meant to be any kind of exhaustive list of stories to watch... What are you keeping your eye on here in 2013? Let us know in the comments...

Speaking of low-rise stretches of businesses that will soon be extinct

On Sunday, I was walking along Delancey. I stopped to look at the incoming Holiday fucking Inn coming to the corner at Suffolk. I took a photo, and tried to imagine how noisy a room would be here given its location overlooking an insanely busy bridge and thoroughfare.

Taking in the block, I figured the one-level row of businesses to the east of the hotel had a short life span. Not exactly a visionary statement given the ongoing rush to develop parcels of land with so much potential.

In any event, BoweryBoogie had the news yesterday that the one-story strip of 156-164 Delancey Street next to the Holiday Inn is on the market. Per the listing, there are 11,990 square-feet of developable air rights. The parcel has a $3.95 million price tag.

Wonder if that Holiday Inn has triple-paned windows ...

If it's October, then it might be time to throw away last season's Christmas tree, probably

Dave on 7th spotted the above on East Sixth Street today... what was, most likely, or not, a Christmas (holiday) tree. "The branches are in the bags," Dave on 7th hopefully pointed out.

Fine. But where is the verification/authentification/random -tion word to prove that this is actually from today?

[Boosting the circulation]

OK, fine. But where is the stump and the bags with the remains of the Christmas (holiday) tree? We called him out on this, said something like FAIL, though in a jovial way that may have been misinterpreted via email.

"Actually, not a fail. Note the same car across the street."

OK. Hold all tickets. This might take awhile.

Current record for Christmas (holiday) tree discarding: June 29-30.

Holiday shopping at d.b.a.

This was forwarded to me...appreciate the communuity spirit here. It's happening at d.b.a. on First Avenue between Second Street and Third Street:

We are pleased to announce our fourth annual Urban Folk Arts & Craft Fair these next three Saturdays, 6th, 13th and 20th December, from 3 until 7:30, in our heated back-patio. "Drink good stuff" while doing some relaxed holiday gift shopping from local artists & crafters - beating the high street mania - shopping for eco-friendly, hand-crafted, fair-priced, original, one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. Buy a beer from one of the 18 draughts, including two hand-pulled ales, or choose from one of the 360 bottled beers, fine wines, or whiskeys, from Gina the lovely bartender, then come on back into the warm and welcoming patio. BYO bags for extra green points! And small bills are always welcome.

An EV Grieve editorial: Time to turn off the lights this season on the Tompkins Square Park holiday tree

It was a fine-looking light job, as always. A lovely tree-lighting ceremony. The tree was still lit up as of last night. It's Jan. 14. Having it on now is just, well, depressing. (Holiday lights in a bar? Different story!) Time to move on. Anyway, we just have one month until Valentine's Day!

[Updated: I'm a jackass...the lights are kept on for a reason. See the comments. Here's more on the Ukrainian holiday from the Web site of St. George's on East Seventh Street. My apologies. But they'd better be off tomorrow! Happy New Year!]

... and by tonight... the block was aglow...

... you hardly noticed the recyclables on the curb...

Remember The Frenchmen on First Avenue

EVG reader Baby Dave recently told us the sad news that The Frenchmen recently closed on First Avenue. The air conditioning shop near East 19th Street had been in business for as long as anyone can remember.

The Town & Village Blog reported on Sept. 6 that the owner, Bill Koniuk, had to close the store due to some health issues.

Reporter Sabina Mollot noted how the shop was well-known to residents of Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village for its annual Christmas party for neighborhood kids.

"The party, a decades-long tradition, included free horse carriage rides, live music, toys and a holiday window display that rivaled midtown’s department stores."

Brown paper now covers the shop's windows, but signs of the holiday remain near the Frenchmen's fantastic sign...

Jeremiah had a post about the Frenchmen's sign back in 2010, and the old-time telephone exchange.

Baby Dave shared this about The Frenchmen:

Mr. Koniuk was a very nice guy. His annual Christmas party was a real throwback, and his holiday window display was a treat.

I once went in on a sweltering Saturday needing help. I asked if the shop made air-conditioning house calls on a Saturday. My mother's machine was sort of revving, but not much else. "No, no house calls today, but what kind of machine is it?" "Does it have an electronic keypad on front?" "OK, just press 'filter alert' and 'Energy saver' [or something like that] at the same time. Hold them for about 15-20 seconds."
And darned if it didn't work. I was practically about to write him a check on the spot, or scurry to the cash machine, and he fixed the problem for free.

In the last few years, it was unclear just how much business the place was doing. I suppose much of the air-conditioning work was done off the premises, but the display of audeo equipment was like a museum: used boom boxes from 1982, maybe a Discman.

And so a little precious bit of a community disappears.

Indeed. No idea what will come here next. But you get an idea of the new local landscape with the recent arrival of this next door ...
