'Good morning sunshine'

Those were the words of a chipper EMT upon coming across an unresponsive L.E.S. Jewels on the corner of Avenue A and East Fourth Street. As multiple readers noted, Engine Company 28 and two ambulances arrived on the scene around 11 a.m.

The EMTs told onlookers that LES Jewels was fine. "He's OK, he's OK," one said.

Afterwards, Jewels' corner companion urinated on the sidewalk.

Jewels make me wish we had ASBOs here. They make sense for cases like this. Jewels is going to torment the neighborhood until he's either dead or in prison. I don't wish either outcome on the guy but I think a ban on him hanging out on Ave. A and TSP and institutionalization of some sort if he can't deal with life (and he can't) would be useful for everyone.

Please stop covering this guy like he is some neighborhood icon. There is no need to make him feel like a rock star. Let's focus on the working people of the neighborhood who do good every day. Anyone else with me on this?

Firstly, try trading your life with Jewels for a week. If you can even last that long.

No one on EVG is making this guy out to be a rock star, but instead reporting on a local person who has been around for years and is well-known. He's a fixture on Avenue A (my street).

Jewels is an addict clearly in need of medication and mental health counseling. As such, your compassion for this individual is welcomed, but your scorn for a sick person is not. !@#$%^ anonymous cowards!

Jewels usually only harms himself. He's not out chopping up little boys. He is a self-destructive person. Who made him this way? Speculate all you want but I'm sure his childhood was nothing short of a nightmare that would send any of us into madness and escape through drugs.

LES Jewels scares you because he reminds you of what you could be.

+1

As for the guy urinating; I wish he had done it inside the loto toilet that he's standing right in front of.

Talk about dime store pyscho-babble. Cry me a river for this guy? I think not. Nut up and right your ship or sink with it, either way I step right over him and keep on walking.

Doubtful. Unless he is really totally unresponsive, which is obviously a possibility. Most times though he is too much of a nuisance and would not let you just step over him!

And that other guy, if you gotta go, you can't just at least find a corner.

And I agree with Shawn, bc while I regret the fact that I have to deal with this all the time. He is clearly in need of help.

Also, I for one, appreciate the knowledge of what is going on in my neighborhood. In no way do I see EVG as glorifying Jewels or his behavior.

I wish there was a blog like this notifying me of what was happening on Ave. D and 3rd St. 11 years ago when I first lived in the EV. Or I guess back then it maybe would have been a zine!

This guy hasn't been a fixture on Avenue A for years so let's not give him any street cred he deserves. I've been in the neighborhood for more than 25 years now. I know all the characters from the park.

And he does harm people. He attacks people, he exposes himself to people! That's okay with you?

Talk to some people he has hurt and harassed, and maybe you'll change your mind. Or maybe not.

No need to glorify people who come to our area to do damage. I don't care what happened to him in the past. There are plenty of people in our neighborhood who have gone through all sorts of horrible crap and they aren't out there hurting other people.

It is not ok with me. He IS a drain on society and a detriment to the neighborhood.

I am not sure what the solution is. Whether you care or not he clearly has demons and being recycled through the system has not worked. For anyone.

Also I would love it if A between 4th and 5th stopped being effing pee palace by the way...

Can we at the least call him by his real name? It is Joel. I know that doesn't sound as "cool" as LES Jewels but this guy is a little too old to be hip anyway. Every time I see a photo of him with his pants around his ankles I want to diaper him. He is a big baby, crying out for attention and leeching off the system.

Shawn: You seem like a compassionate person, but you should save that for someone who deserves it.

Jewels (Joel Pakela) DOES hurt people. He has been arrested and served "skid bids" on Rikers more than three times for attacking people with the cane he used to have with him at all times (a clever way to carry a weapon that appears to have a legitimate purpose) and he's exposed himself to kids in TSP outside of the Avenue A playground countless times. He's also participated in rolling and beating drunks and harassing passersby. And he pisses and shits in public.

This piece of shit parasite also wastes precious resources with endless ambulance calls and FREE hospital stays as he is evaluated. He also gets a FREE card he can use to "buy" food that he sells to get money for booze and drugs AND he gets a FREE cell-phone with FREE minutes renewed every month!!

WHY THE FUCK is this guy being REWARDED for his chosen life-style while I and my neighbors here bust our asses working every day in order to make ends meet????

Agreed, Chris. Do we really need to send fire trucks and ambulances over just to wake this addict up?

I am with Chris Flash on this issue. Chris Flash has neighborhood cred. He's been here fighting the good fight for years. Shawn Chittle lost me when he defended Joel by saying he "usually only harms himself." What!?!? Think before you type!

Yea - sorry Shawn. Your argument here is pretty weak. I know you love to stick up for the scum of the neighborhood, but this time, you're sticking up for the wrong guy. No need to regurgitate what everyone else just said, so I'll leave it at that.

Guess I'll have to ramp up my coverage of Hot Dog (aka, Marlene).

Love how the earlier poster speculates his childhood was a nightmare. Hate to break it to you, bro, but there are plenty of people who are heavy into drink and drugs and they didn't have horrific childhoods. Also know plenty of people who abuse alcohol and drugs but don't harm other people. This dude is a straight up creep. If his defender cares about him so much why doesn't he step up and do something to help Jewels. See where that will get you.

Jewels wouldn't bother me if he really did only harm himself. He yells at people & confronts them, he does not just keep to himself.

Also, what everyone else said.

The clean and safe rep' of the new EV is already drawing too many hipsters here. Maybe we need more folks like JP in the area to remind outsiders that the EV is still unsafe and to stay away.

Sorry, but I'm for anything that decreases demand and brings down property values in the neighborhood.

i am a homeowner, and i still tend to agree with this poster above. there is almost nothing left around here to deter the frat brats and yuppies.
i also agree with chris that the system is broken.
i also agree with shawn that we must always have compassion for those who suffer.

Joel doesn't harass the yuppies. He picks on people like Ray. And whether or not I like yuppies, I don't want anyone to come to my neighborhood and be unsafe. I don't wish being potentially harmed on anyone. Those of you who do need to really think about what you are saying because I don't think you really mean it.
