[Updated] Report: NYPD makes arrest in Tompkins Square Park sexual assualt

Police have reportedly arrested a suspect believed to have sexually assaulted a woman in Tompkins Square Park late Friday night. As DNAinfo reports, there are few details about the attack, which occurred near the entrance at East Eighth Street and Avenue B.

The Daily News describes the suspect as a homeless man, and that the victim, a 31-year-old woman, was sleeping on a bench in the Park when the attack occurred. (The News article isn't currently available online.)

DNAinfo quotes a hostess at an unnamed restaurant on Avenue A and East Seventh Street as saying, "This area is, no joke, not safe. There's not much security."

Updated:
1010 WINS reports that the suspect is Ruben Canales, 27.

As a woman I never walk thru there at night. My thoughts are with the victim. I hope she's alright. This is a terrible, terrible incident and I really hope the police beef up security.

You mean a park lousy with crusties isn't safe? I'm shocked.

DNAinfo says she was walking in the park... and this post says that the Daily News says she was SLEEPING in the park. Which is it?

i know it does seem to matter, but it should not matter - if the woman was walking or napping.
or if she was young, naked, sexy or whatever.
violence against women (or men) is not acceptable.

So that is why the news crew was there this morning...

All the reports say she ran into a "nearby deli" or into "kaman deli on Avenue A.". They obviously mean Kamaran Deli on the west side of Avenue A and Fifth St. That's a long way to go for help. And, most inexplicably, the attacker followed her in there.

IMHO, there's always more to these stories than meets the eye. The NYDN reported that the woman was "sleeping" on a bench in TSP around 10:30 PM where she awoke in the middle of the attack. As the poster above noted, her alleged attacker followed her at least 3 blocks into the deli. I don't know the what happened, but at the minimum there was extremely bad judgement used, because ANY NYC park is a dangerous place at night, be you male, female, young or old. This ain't Peoria folks.

And for the young man murdered on 14th St. bet 5th & 6th, it was 4:30 AM. I'm not judging him, but the facts are that he was a youth soccer coach from West Harrison, NY and was out with his girlfriend until midnight. What he was doing out on the street arguing with an unidentified man at 4:30 AM is anyone's guess. Scoring dope ?, hooking up ?, doing a condo deal ? I dunno... you tell me. This is BloomYork, you gotta watch your ass, because the perception by the perps of who the average NY'er out on the street has changed.
