Here's Penny-farthing on Third Avenue, not a sports bar

Over on 13th Street and Third Avenue, work continues at the former Cafe DeVille space... EV Grieve reader Margaret passed along this shot from the weekend...

Grub Street had many more details on what will be going in here... the space, which the Phebe's folks took over, will be called Penny-farthing (a type of bicycle also known as a high wheeler). Brass Monkey designer Ben Kay is doing this space... Per Grub Street:

A year ago, it was said the space would get a sports bar, but Kay says that Penny-farthing ... will have no more than a few television sets for World Cup games and the like. Kay is giving that bi-level venue a “very industrial but comfortable atmosphere”— upstairs there’ll be a 45-foot-long bar made of “ancient-looking” wood, banquette seating, and high-top tables, as well as antique wheels, pulleys, and prints to fit the bar’s name ... Downstairs there’ll be a lounge boasting exposed stone and another bar. A full kitchen will turn out “American-English-Irish” bar food “in the same vein as Phoebe’s” (think shepherd’s pie). The owners are hoping to open in the second week of May.

I got a look myself at all this on Saturday...

What happened to DJ Lenny M?

A reader asked the other day whatever happened to DJ Lenny M's Music World, the mix-tape emporium on the corner of Third Avenue and St. Mark's Place... DJ Lenny M has been playing hip-hop and R&B and selling tapes and CDs out of that niche space for has long as I can remember — more than 20 years at least.

As the reader noted, "This has killed my daily Michael Jackson intake on my walk home."

Now that I think about it... I can't recall the last time that I even saw him there... One nearby shopkeeper said yesterday that Lenny closed up because there was "no business."

DJ Lenny M was busted in February 2009 for selling illegal CDs and operating without a license... (Down by the Hipster had the story here.) He reopened a short time later.

And now, a new vendor is in the space...

One that sells stuff that you can find anywhere else on the block...

DJ Lenny M makes an appearance in a November 1990 Times article...

A weekend in NoHo -- a sliver of a neighborhood whose spine is Broadway from Astor Place down to Houston Street -- has become an initiation rite of adolescence, as a weekend in Greenwich Village was for decades. The neighborhood, barely 10 years old, has become the spiritual and fashion adviser to the young of New York, whether from Ronkonkoma or around the corner.

Those merely clinging to hipness come, too, though they are not fooling anybody; black clothes are not enough. Antennas here are preternaturally tuned to the wrong sneaker or the wrong haircut. As the saleswoman at Alada, a clothing store, made clear, only yuppies buy "Die Yuppie Scum" T-shirts anymore.

Weekday afternoons can be lively, but the time to come, several recent visits suggested, is Saturday or Sunday, and not before 1 P.M. That is when residents take to the side streets and the faithful arrive, with saving the planet in their hearts and spending money on their minds.

They come looking for D.J. Lenny M. on the sidewalk, selling his homemade tapes of Reg Rockers, Club Rap and House Music.

20 years of selling vintage clothes in the East Village

On March 1, 1990, Richard Colligan opened Metropolis Vintage Apparel at 96 Avenue B between Sixth Street and Seventh Street. In 1995, he moved to 43 Third Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street. Starting tomorrow, the store is celebrating its 20th anniversary, a long time for any type of independent business hereabouts... On the eve of the anniversary, Colligan, a Rockaway Beach native, answered a few questions via e-mail for EV Grieve ....

On Jan. 3, the Post reported: "The East Village's vintage-clothing shops are about to go the way of leisure suits and flapper dresses, as a wave of closures hits home." What was your reaction to the story, which didn't take into account the many stores that remain open and are doing well...?

My reaction to that story, which surprised me, was that so many stores said they're not doing well. The East Village over the last few years has seen a lot of growth of people who have money to spend and, if you don't cater to them, you fall victim of being out of touch. Look, vintage is fashion and fashion changes, if you want to stick to your guns and keep selling what you sold 10 years ago, well go ahead, but be prepared to watch your sales go down as your customers get older and move out of the area. The EV has always been — and I think always will be — a place for young people, as the beatniks, the hippies, the Punks (as myself) the hair metal rockers, the grunge rockers or THE HIPSTERS and young college students of today prove. Today I feature late 80's early 90's in my store. Well, some people say that's not vintage and I say, "What sells is vintage," 1990 was 20 years a go, get used to it. Thirty-year-old eyeballs don't see what a 20-year-old eyeballs see what will be attractive.

Biggest change — for better or worse — that you've seen in the EV/LES in these 20 years?

Crime has been reduced a lot. But never would I have thought that the reduction of crime brought such a bigger increase of prices in RENT. The rent at Avenue B was $1,000 a month, now I pay $10,000 on 3rd Ave. Do I want it to go back to "the good old days?" NO, I will take the rent over the crime. If one day I can't afford the rent, then it's my time to move on.

Many stores have come and gone in the EV through the years... what do you think has made your store successful?

I think I have been able to tap in to what the younger customer wants in vintage. Pushing forward is my motive. I can write a novel of what sold well over the years, but if you get stuck in a rut you rust. The EV is for young people who are finding out about themselves. I just try and help them on that journey.

And Colligan sent along two photos from 1994 of the store when it was on Avenue B....

And tomorrow...

Was just a matter of time before EV got The 13th Step

Thanks to Jeremiah for remembering this one... So, now that the Jake's Dilemma-Down-the Hatch team and their Celebrating xxx years of Debauchery slogan folks have finally established an EV beachhead with the 13th Step.... We recall that Team Hatch unsuccessfully tried to open a bar at the former Grace & Hope Mission at 114-116 Third Ave. Our old friends at East Village podcasts covered the CB3/SLA meeting back in July 2008.

And, of course, the former Mission is now home to Robin Raj ...and the psychic!

At the former Cafe DeVille, the black plastic goes up, the dead potted plants go out

EV Grieve reader Margaret noted some activity at the shuttered Cafe DeVille space at 13th Street and Third Avenue:

The windows in Cafe Deville were covered with black plastic on Friday. Dead potted palms from inside were also put out on the curb. There wasn't any sort of notice on the door, so it doesn't look a permit has been filed with the city. Intrigued as to what's going on in there.

As Eater reported last September: "The folks applying for a transfer for the Cafe Deville space received approval. The only stipulations proposed by the board do not allow for live music and set that the establishment must be run similar to the owners' other establishment Phebe's, the tavern/sports bar on 4th and Bowery."

I used to go to Phebe's a long time ago... in recent years it has become as fratty as a Murray Hill sports bar...

Price cutting atop Kiehl's

In early December, we wrote about 203 E. 13th St. #PH4B, the rooftop pad on Third Avenue above Kiehl's...it's a fine looking home that was going for $1.265 million.

Well, thank God that you didn't buy it then.

Why?

Last Thursday, the owners slashed the price by $200,000 (16 percent) to $1,065,000. With that money you just saved, you can buy some shampoo at Kiehl's.

The official listing is here. Streeteasy has some history.

123 Third Avenue ramps up its marketing efforts with an ad facing away from traffic

There's a new ad up for 123 Third Avenue, the high-rise condo on Third Avenue and 14th Street. (Or, "East Union Square"...) The ad promises the sale center is coming soon... The 123 Web site still says sales office "opening late fall 2009."

Anyway, seems like kind of an odd spot for an ad -- especially given that it faces away from the traffic on the one-way 10th Street between Fourth Avenue and Third Avenue...

Anyway, this 19-story, 47-unit condo will include a ground-floor garden and outdoor movie screen. The developer of 123 is Orange Management, which currently has its hands full with the 22 Renwick property...

Futurizing about the corner of 14th Street and Third Avenue

Earlier today, we spotted workers cleaning out the former Robin Raj space on the southwest corner of 14th Street and Third Avenue...

Perhaps this is an early sign that a new horrible tenant is on the way... The space has been vacant for nearly a year. As reported then: The landlord was looking for $60,000 a month in rent...

East Hardware now closed

In December, signs went up at East Hardware at 79 Third Avenue near 11th Street saying that the store is moving from its ground floor space in the Third North NYU dorm...

When I asked where they were moving, I received a blank look. Pause. "We're not. We're just leaving this location." The store is now closed, and there are no signs indicating a new location....

East Hardware joins the Mid-Atlantic Newsstand at Third Avenue and NYU has former tenants....

When I asked where they were moving, I received a blank look. Pause. "We're not. We're just leaving this location." Rent hike. I said that I was sorry to hear this. I was met with a shrug of the shoulders. "That's life."

Yes, especially here.

Starting rumors: Is "Mad Men" actor John Slattery opening a restaurant on Third Avenue?

This vacant restaurant on Third Avenue near 10th Street is up for a liquor license tonight at the CB3/SLA extravaganza...

...and one John Slattery's name is on the notice.

Could it be "Mad Men"'s Roger Sterling? The actor/community activist known as John Slattery?

Or maybe the John Slattery at CBS 2...

Or not. Anyway, a better bet is the John Slattery who co-owns Slattery's Midtown Pub on 36th Street. Which means NYU Avenue is getting an Irish-style pub?

Speaking of rooftops: 'Own a piece of history in this boutique condo Penthouse of the historic Kiehl's Building'

I've always been intrigued by the cabin-looking home atop the Kiehls's building on 13th Street and Third Avenue. Here are two photos from a post that Scouting NY did on the house earlier this year...I read somehwere that one of the Coen Brothers used to live here...

Anyway, I came across a listing for 203 E. 13th St. #PH4B. Apparently this one has been on the market for some time. This PH doesn't include the cabin, though you at least have use of part of that rooftoop space...

According to that listing:

Own a very unique penthouse apartment in the Historical Kiehl's Building built in 1851. This astonishing loft like large one bedroom is in pristine condition with soaring 11 ft ceilings and is flooded with sun. This stunning apartment has original exposed brick & enormous brick arched windows all facing south. It comes equipped with a washer/dryer, built in security system and a beautifully renovated kitchen and bath. The spiral staircase leads to your own very private roof garden oasis of over 400 sq ft! Pets are welcome. Come and see for yourself. Own a piece of history in this boutique condo Penthouse of the historic Kiehl's Building now called Pear Tree Place named after the pear tree that once grew just beyond the front door.

This space can be yours for $1.265 million (715 square feet). But that price doesn't include the hellacious views that you'll have of the mystery lot next door!

Live music returning to the Continental (for at least one night)

And check out the lineup at the Rock 'n Roll reunion on Jan. 17...

Third Avenue near St. Mark's Place. I actually haven't been here since they renovated the space and did away with live music several years ago. As Trigger, the owner, said at the time: "When he first opened the club 15 years ago, the East Village was still the East Village. Now I’m surrounded by McDonald’s and Starbucks and K-Mart and I’m paying that level rent..."

That special time of year when Rolf's ConEd bill quadruples

The holiday lights are up again at Rolf's, the German eatery on Third Avenue at 22nd Street. You'll find the usual: Some 70,000 light bulbs and Victorian-era tchochkes. Despite what the photos below show, it seemed a little less over the top than in previous years.

And please do not stare at any of the photos for too long: You may suffer a seizure. Or turn into a toddler.

Anyway, definitely worth seeing once. It gets awfully crowded with the office party crowd. So pick your time...
