From Joey Ramone to Debbie Harry on the Bowery

Back on Monday, a crew painted over the two-year-old Joey Ramone/CBGB mural on Bleecker at the Bowery...

In its place on Tuesday, Shepard Fairey (in connection with The L.I.S.A. Project NYC) created a mural in honor of Debbie Harry and Blondie...

..which wrapped up on Wednesday afternoon with a visit by Harry and Chris Stein. (Godlis has some photos here.)

Harry and Fairey previously collaborated on a project for his Obey fashion label coinciding with the 40-year anniversary of Blondie's debut album.

Updated 8:30 a.m.

Lola Sáenz notes this morning that, given the placement of the cardboard, it appears Debbie Harry has a new necklace...

Watch Paul Richard install his Shepard Fairey addition

We pointed out the Paul Richard addition to the Shepard Fairey mural on the Bowery and Houston the other day....

...it has since been removed/stolen...

And now a reader sent along a link to Richard installing the sign....

The Shepard Fairey mural is just a hole-y mess now

Last night (or early this morning), more of the Shepard Fairey mural on Houston and the Bowery has been ripped apart...

BoweryBoogie has been keeping tabs on the destruction here as well...

On 14th Street and Avenue A, Posse in Effect with the Beastie Boys

Here's a day 2 work-in-progress look at Posse in Effect featuring the Beastie Boys, a new mural going up on the SW corner of 14th Street and Avenue A (on the east-facing wall of 436 E. 14th St.).

Shepard Fairey, in collaboration with the Lisa Project NYC, is working on the wall... from a photo by East Village-based photographer Glen E. Friedman. The work is part of the ongoing celebration of 50 years of hip hop.

Fairey, the Lisa Project and Friedman last joined forces on the Bad Brains mural last December on Bleecker at the Bowery.

Shepard Fairey mural gets boarded up, no trespassing signs

As Jeremiah first noted this morning, the Shepard Fairey vandalism magnet on Houston and the Bowery is getting covered up... this afternoon, a worker was also putting up "no trespassing" signs...

How long before that plywood is tagged?

Keith Haring reappears on Houston and the Bowery

This arrived sometime Sunday night/Monday morning...Just around the corner from Shepard Fairey's illegal ad... site of the former Haring mural...

Meanwhile, BoweryBoogie notes that the Fairey mural hasn't been tagged in a week... He also offers this: "The street has spoken loud and clear: time to move on and tear down the wall."

Going to the Shepard Fairey mural, and we're going to get married...

Oh my. In case you haven't seen this shot that Jill posted on Blah Blog Blah... On their wedding day, a couple apparently stopped to have photos taken in front of the illegal (maybe!) Shepard Fairey mural on Houston and the Bowery...

There's so much I want to know. Was this a planned stop? Or were they just motoring by in the Bride Mobile and spontaneously decided to combust stop? Or did the happy couple drive all over the city and have their photos taken in front of things, like the Kiss Mural outside Nice Guy Eddie's? (Now THAT is romantic!)

On a Sunday (Blah Blog Blah)

What a piece of Shepard Fairey's vandalized Deitch Wall mural is going for on eBay

As you'll recall, vandals took to the Shepard Fairey mural on Houston and the Bowery last summer... Now a tipster passes along an item up for grabs on eBay: A genuine piece of the wall... And $100 for the starting bid!

Wonder how much more of the wall will turn up now... there are plenty of pieces to sell...

Time for the Shepard Fairey mural to go

I'm not sure what else to say about the Shepard Fairey mural on Houston and the Bowery... every day, a little bit more of it disappears... it's like a beached whale being slowly pecked clean by every passing seagull, crab, uh, you get the idea. I took these photos last evening. I'm sure it looks worse this morning.

Or maybe the mural is more interesting this way, as one East Village resident suggested to DNAinfo.

BoweryBoogie has an update on the mural today too.

Every day, a little bit more of Shepard Fairey chips away...

The damage to the Shepard Fairey mural on Houston and the Bowery continues... a bit more advanced this evening than Sunday morning...

Meanwhile, our friend Bryan Waterman weighs in on this mural today at Patell and Waterman’s History of New York. In short: "It’s hard not to see this as the public demanding something better on that corner."

[Updated] Tagging the Bowery mural wall

This past weekend, someone defaced David Choe's week-old canvas on the Bowery Mural Wall.

BoweryBoogie reported that the vandalism was due "to past comments made on [Choe's] podcast bragging about an alleged sexual encounter with a masseuse in 2014." Choe later claimed that his confession was simply "bad storytelling in the style of douche." Regardless, as BoweryBoogie put it, "Critics have been accusing him of rape ever since."

Hyperallergic published an op-ed last week titled "How the New Bowery Wall Commission Puts Rape Culture on Display."

The "BTM" tag on the wall is apparently the work of Big Time Mafia. It's unclear if their message is related to Choe's past or general disdain for the wall, owned by Goldman Properties, and/or Choe's work.

Another tag on the wall last week was more explicit...

Updated 6/14

And this wasn't the first time that someone has tagged/bombed/defaced the work up on the Bowery Mural Wall in recent years. A sampling includes:

Logan Hicks last September...

Swoon in January in January 2014...

Maya Hayuk's criss-cross mural in February 2014...

Kenny Scharf multiple times in early 2011...

Shepard Fairey in July 2010...

...and Fairey in May 2010...

The bottom part of the mural was eventually ripped to shreds...

Paul Richard puts up a larger sign on Shepard Fairey's mural

On Monday, we posted a video of Paul Richard hanging a sign on Shepard Fairey's Bowery/Houston mural... the sign was quickly removed...

And this past week Paul Richard put up another, larger sign, as you'll see here...

That, too, has been removed...

Shepard Fairey's Cooper Square Hotel mural tagged too

After seeing photos of the epic bombing of Shepard Fairey's Bowery/Houston mural this past weekend, a reader said that he also noticed a small tag on Shep's Cooper Square Hotel work ...

... by the time we stopped by, the small tag had been wiped mostly clean... but you can still see the outline...

...this first attempt may just be the start of Open Season here too...
