Air conditioning inspection at the former Amato Opera

On one recent November day, we noticed a sign hanging from the former home of the Amato Opera on the Bowery.

Perhaps a clue to the new tenant?!

Nope. Just a letter from the Bureau of Fire Prevention Inspectors. They need to inspect the air conditioning unit, which seemed to be working OK when the Amato Opera closed in May.

Greive , the fire department inspects A/C equipment routinely . they check for the equipment operating permit which is obtained after the building dept reviews the plans and later actually inspects the equipment installation . They of course are supposed to look for problems that might cause a fire or make a fire worse .

Any system in any building above a minimal cooling capacity and air circulating capacity must have an operating permit . there is an inspection fee that is levied also .There is nothing here that is unusual nor does this have much to do with whether the system actually works . Its mostly papers , "may I see your papers", and not much of an actual physical inspection , which it should be in many cases . . . .

Ah, thanks Bob. When I saw the note from a distance, I thought that I might get some idea of who may be taking over the space.... After seeing the notice, I thought this might be some ridiculous city bureaucracy.... So it's all just routine.

What beautiful handwriting on that note, it looks like it was written in 1903.
