At Serious Eats today, editor Maggie Hoffman lists her favorite places to eat in the East Village... by category... Among her picks:

I dig Rue B for brunch. usually less crowded and they do amazing things to eggs.

skip the wait at Ippudo and head to Minca instead

I can't argue with the choices for Chinese, Indian (could of gone with Brick Lane as well), or Thai. The pizza choices are good but a bit pricey.

The only Indian place that doesn't wrench my guts is Haveli on 2nd Ave.
Of course, as always, YMMV
