The new venture of old Christine's

As Jeremiah noted last fall, Christine's Polish American Restaurant at 208 First Avenue near 12th Street had closed... (subject of Allen Ginsberg's "The Charnel Ground," as he pointed out...)

Nearly one year later, a new tenant has emerged...

...a Lebanese pizza and grill...

"Lebanese Pitza." Hm. In Montreal, there are Lebanese chains called "Basha" all over, and they do AMAZING food that you absolutely cannot find in NYC. Particularly, chicken on a spit called dish "shistouak" (even if you find it on an nyc menu, it is not the same), served along with garlic sauce, rice & potatoes, wonderful salad with parnips(?) and white sauce dressing, and various sides (roasted cauliflower & eggplant are a particular favorite)... all kinda similar to our falafel/middle eastern places, but NOT the same.

Trust me, I didn't think there was something you could NOT find in NYC, but shistaouk is it. OH, if balade did this, it would be so amazing!

And if you are in the Montreal area, seek out a Basha. They are independently owned, so they differ a bit from each other (my favorite is actually in a strip mall in Pointe Claire)... YUMMM I need to drive to Canada soon.
