Mars Bar regulars get in the way of a Drew Barrymore photo shoot

Over the weekend, we had a very important post about some guy from "Gossip Girl" going to the Mars Bar for one of those "A Night Out With" features in the Times.

And the conversation turned to Drew Barrymore's recent photo shoot at Mars Bar for the new issue of Nylon. So here are the shots from that Mars Bar photo shoot in the magazine. (Dunno why the guy in the newsstand got so annoyed when I did this!)

Um, you can't even tell it's the Mars Bar. As EV Grieve reader ak commented, "still trying to decide if i believe that the background was photoshopped out of the others." And Goggla said: "I was there for the Barrymore shoot and the weird thing is they used white backdrops for the photos. If they wanted to block out all the graffiti, why go in there in the first place? (they also made sure to block out all the regulars)" And Jeremiah found some outtakes from the shoot here:

Since Goggla was there, I asked her more about the shoot...:

There were about 14 regulars in there and they just had the ones sitting at the end of the bar move out of the way. They shot back by the bathrooms and up front by the windows, but put backdrops up in both places. They didn't even hang around to drink, so I really don't know why they bothered.

why did they bother? if the photos they used include only a sliver of mars bar and you can't even tell? weird. somewhere in the editorial process, the grubby graffiti look was nixed. a good sign for mars bar if it's not yet totally embraced by the fashionista culture.

This shoot looks phony--ugh--Drew just lost a great deal of appeal.

Mars Bar last days (if it is so) tends to remind me of a Night Gallery episode by Rod Serling 'They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar'.

Well worth looking up...if you're into nostalgia or things disappearing very quickly.

These things are always fake in one way or another. That's showbiz.
What did they pay the location for the use of the space? How long were they there? It's not like they can just show up and start snapping photos for a thing like this. The owners could have said no. If you don't want this kind of thing at a local joint, tell the owners. Then they owner can decide if they value loyal patronage more that a quick buck.

I think this shoot pretty much exemplifies what's going on in the city - they're trying to white wash and photoshop it:

"Oooh, this city is sooo gritty and I'm sooo cool for living here, but I'd like it to be cleaner and glamorous and sophisticated, so if you could just wash that graffiti off and you locals can just go away, I'd like this city to be a reflection of my fabulous SATC life."

Go f*^k yourselves, damn Scary Sadshaws wannabes. (Sorry, haven't had my mourning [not sic] dose of cupcakes and fro-yos yet)

The shoot was organized with the owner of the bar and it was most definitely not fake (almost comical that the bar stayed open the entire time), but it's really strange that they managed to block out their environment so entirely. I would have rented them my apartment if all they needed was low-lighting and grubby walls.

She looks frozen, only the bar has any life in it.

i think a quick buck is the reason mars bar is still around.

Maybe it's far, far cheaper to shoot in a bar than in a studio? What with tightened print magazine budgets these days. But I'm with Goggla, they can rent my apartment any time for a gross environment. Maybe I would even vacuum before they arrived so their white sheets wouldn't get too dirty. Or we could go in the hallway for a truly grim experience. I'll bet Mars Bar doesn't have a bathtub in their kitchen. I'll do most anything for a cheap buck. How do we get in on such action I wonder.

Jill: I don't think these people would go for the five flight walk part of the deal.

should have gone to Ham Bar or Super Douche, the new face of the EV.
Note to self :never see another movie with Drew B in it again....then again what was the last movie I saw with her in it? ET ? That chick does not need to phone home, she needs to GO home!
