It looked like Police State in the East Village Last night. Residents couldn't enter or leave their buildings, cars were towed and the area of 12 Street was locked down. But it can't really be a Police State because Obama is the president.

I was thinking about this as I stood, freezing in my gym clothes, for over 20 minutes waiting to cross the street to get home. Is this really necessary in a democracy? I mean outside Banana Republics, does the president / king really need to be so insulated from his surroundings?

Don't get me wrong, I am a lukewarm fan of Obama, but I used to live across the street from parliament in New Zealand and there was never this ridiculous fuss. Do other countries make such a big deal when moving their heads of state from place to place? Could he really not have gone west on thirteenth, south on 5th and back up 12th like a normal person?

Maybe I'm naive and there really are maniac James Earl Rays on every block waiting to take a potshot.

Anyway - it pissed me off; I just wanted to cross the goddam street and get home for some dinner.
