I'm starting to think this is some kind of reality TV show, like lets see how many cheap pizza shops we can gradually (or may not so gradually) put in one neighborhood and watch people's reactions.
The price of everything's gone up, most of all food and fuel, yet somehow pizza is getting cheaper around here. It don't add up, is there some kind of weird government subsidy I don't know about. Anyways its now officially out of control. $1 pizza along with fro-yo is the "Brawndo" of 2012 East Village. It's over, Johnny!
Though they almost certainly use the cheapest ingredients available, there's no way that $2.50 worth of flour, tomato sauce, and mozarella goes into the higher priced pizza slices elsewhere.
In Manhattan, the great bulk of the cost of doing business is the cost of real estate; the rents are sky high. After that, there's the cost of labor.
And of course, in a cash business, taxes frequently are "wonderfully" reduced for the business owner.
I'll say this is most likely money laundering at its finest, all you have to do is look at other major cities..now aint it strange how new york city it the only place where the 99 cent pizza business model actually works and to have them stay open for more than 2 months, I cant even think of any that closed in nyc yet(while regular pizza joints are closing left and right)...almost all owned by three people,Mohammad Abdul Hai(owner of 99 fresh pizza joints) and the Eli Halali and Ali Halali (2 bros pizza) ...imo there is always some type of scam running when you start to see too much of the same business on the same blocks and none fail, like NYC deli's, their money ticket is the EBT and benefit cards. take away that and watch 75% of the deli's close in NYC, no more $5~10 extra to put beer or cig's or giving cash back on card (ie $40 cash back for a $60 charge)
11B Express was genius in giving away all that pizza during the hurricane. Once you've had it, you just can't eat the $1 stuff. It's not 3x better, it's 300x. Oh, and the slices are huge. An entire meal.

It's because wheat prices went down nd because they use the absolute lowest grade, shittiest ingredients

The dollar slices are smaller. At least, the couple I've tried/observed.

It's a favorite hangout for kids after school. If you ever walk down St. Marks around 3:15pm, you'll see what I mean.
