That's it: The Mars Bar is closed for good

Earlier, we mentioned that the DOH had shuttered the Mars Bar today. Goggla just stopped by. They're not reopening. That's it. Per Goggla, George is frantically taking down art. So — if you have stuff here, now would be a good time to stop by and collect it.

Updated: Slum Goddess has a post on the closure with some recent pics. Per Slum Goddess: "I will miss this place more than any normal person should miss a bar considering I don't much care for bars really..but this one was special! NYC just became a lot more boring."

Yeah, i did a short blog post about it after i heard the rumor. I figured it's true and it's not going to reopen. Probably ever.

Time to queue up "No Fun" by Iggy and The Stooges.

I empathize. Been going to the same bar for a couple of decades, would be utterly devastated if it closed.

It's hard to explain to people that it's not just a bar, it's so much more than that. There are many people I only know through Mars and I'm really sad to think I might never see them again.

@Marty - you bought my very last drink there!

I wonder if Blarney Cove is worried..

@Goggla: I'm happy to have bought you your last drink in there, your Mars Bar photos are the best. To the Mars Bar!

Ah well. Mars, truly beloved shit hole of hell. You take with it the last breath of the east village.

So much for a summer of last hurrahs. *Sigh*.

The official death of NYC.

The Mars Bar opened in 1984. While I very much rue its demise, NYC was a very vibrant, alive place prior to its opening and will continue to be so after its closing. This city's survival does not depend on the existence of any one particular venue. Here are some names that come to mind, in no particular order: Mudd Club, CBGB, Tier 3, Save The Robots, The Nursery, Lismar Lounge, Club 82, Cheetah Disco, Max's Kansas City, One U, The Peppermint Lounge at 100 5th Ave., Heartbreak on Varick Street, Danceteria etc.
