Today's sign of the apocalypse: IHOP will have a bouncer

As you're painfully aware, IHOP opened yesterday on East 14th Street. And, according to the Post today:

IHOP is so convinced its new East Village location is going to be an after-hours hipster hot spot that it has hired a bouncer.

An off-duty cop will stand guard outside the East 14th franchise each night from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. in order to keep the bar crowd at bay, manager Michael Carlos said, explaining, “When people have a few drinks, they can get rowdy.”

Hipster hot spot? Uh-huh.

Anyway, let's give it up to Niall Gibbons for this quote:

“IHOP is bland and belongs in Times Square — it doesn’t make sense in the East Village. The neighborhood has lots of character, but the character fades when something like this comes along.”

It's brilliant. After ingesting mass quantities of alcohol, what better way to prevent vomiting than a big fat stack of sugary, gooey pancakes ?

The 'burbies will flock there.

Come for the irony. Stay for the carbs.

Obviously Gibbon hasn't actually set foot recently and doesn't realize IHOP is perfect for the college town the E Vil has been developed into.

IHOP could absolutely be the spot for pancakes after a night spent drinking at the Beauty Bar (for an ironic laugh) or the Blind Pig (for the Pick-A-Pancake Combo).

ihop is so bland, it doesn't even belong in times square; only in the 'burbs, only in the 'burbs

I've never eaten at an IHOP. Just wanted to share that.

You mean I'm gonna be hassled by some bouncer after I stumble in from Hype Lounge after some brewskis with some bros for tutti frutti pancakes???

Dear Niall:

The East 14th Street location is not now, and has never been,* the East Village. 14th Street has always been the DMZ between downtown and "up there".

Best Very Old East Village Denizen.

*This blurring of the great divide began to occur when the EV went from being a neighborhood to a marketing idea.

@Grieve

I've eaten there as a kid, but to be fair, the rhyming menu options did sound fun at the time.

next thing you know they'll have a velvet rope and be offering bottle service and patrons get vip treatment for every $300 worth of bottle of syrup purchased

Where was the nearest Horn & Hardart? Where was the nearest Chock Full O' Nuts? Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

@Scott S - I'd like to add Woolworths lunch counter to that excellent list.

horn & hardart or chock full o'nuts or woolworth's didn't need a bouncer
