Open Double Wide and...: Double Wide Bar & Southern Kitchen opening this weekend on East 12th Street

We don't know much about the new bar-restaurant opening at 505 E. 12th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B (the former homes of Totem and Mundial). (We talked about the space in late August when some neighbors were upset by the late-night renovations here.)

We traded emails with one of the partners of the new venture. He invited us to stop by for a tour. (Never made it by for some reason...) The place is called Double Wide Bar & Southern Kitchen. And according to the Double Wide Facebook page, they're opening this weekend.

One detail: We asked the partner about the rumored "white trash" theme. "'White trash' may have come from descriptions of some of our menu items, like Frito Pie, Sloppy Joe Sliders, Chicken Fried Steak, etc (with four-star quality and ingredients)."

Stay tuned for more details...

[Updated] The Double Wide folks say that they'll be "partially" open this weekend...

Previously.

The menu sounds good to me. They could fill a void left by the closure of Old Devil Moon. But I hope they are a good neighbor unlike the previous two tenants of their space who drove all of the neighbors insane with the loud music. Here is hoping Double Wide is different and aims to be more of a restaurant than a bar.

From the menu items listed, the name of the restaurant sounds like a description of what your ass will be if you eat there too often.

old devil moon was an incredibly unique NYC institution that could not have existed anywhere else.
this place just sounds like the continued invasion of the village by the midwest. i really, really hate this trend.
nyc is becoming inhabited by teo kinds of people - tourists, and tourists who never leave (entirely different than the transplants of the 2oth century).
RIP REAL NEW YORKERS

Their hours say "bar" not restaurant. Kitchen is very small. Doubt people will be flocking here for the menu, but instead a lot of drinking. They are already planning a trivia night in the restaurant space and who knows what else will come next. Also they will have outdoor seating in the back, never a plus for residents. It's a big space and they'll need plenty of customers to meet their bottom line. Result- a whole lot of noise on a residential street.

Really? You should try getting out more often. Or at least to literally ANYWHERE else in the United States.

What was unique to NYC about it?

@Anon 11:54 - glamma is right, Old Devil Moon was truly unique. I've been lost without it. Excellent and food and atmosphere, but an especially awesome staff who were friendly and knew their customers. They always knew what I wanted and were accommodating when I needed it. Where can you find a place like that anymore?

Well here's one thing I found unique about Old Devil Moon: They loved and respected the vegetarians, man. I still remember their chicken-fried tofu steaks with BBQ sauce ...

New people put bacon in fucking everything.

Old Devil Moon was great until the last couple years when the food and service went downhill. The owners were less involved, and the staff wasn't experienced enough to keep everything up to the original standards. It was too bad because this place was so good for so long, a neighborhood staple.

For a moment I thought it was a new gay bar.
