Avenue B loft with Corinthian columns is apparently "every hipster's dream"

Oh, disregard that top photo. Those are the Corinthian columns out front of my apartment, which were given to me by late great-great grandfather, Zeus Grieve...

Now back to the post....

Well, when we last checked in at the former Newsboys' and Bootblacks' Lodging House and Tompkins Square Lodging House for Boys and Industrial School, Children's Aid Society .... Jeez, OK — you know, that place where Matt Dillon has been living on Avenue B and Eighth Street...

...we were checking out a loft with a stage ...

Now, another milestone loft is on the market in the building, which was erected in 1887...

Per the listing:

Live and work in this huge, open loft . Facing Tompkins Square Park, on Avenue B, in the most incredible landmark East Village building. 12 foot ceilings and huge windows, this 2 bedroom corner loft apartment is every hipster's dream! Live totally "outside the box" in every way and wow your friends as they enter this one-of-a-kind space. Corinthian columns. Great south and west light. Steps to the best of the East Village. Nothing else like it. Video intercom system. Sorry no shares.

And hipsters — keep dreaming... the rent is $7,000.

Or if that dump on East Eighth Street is too fancy for you, then try this one...

Wouldn't the absolute "hipster's dream" be somewhere in Brooklyn? No *credible* hipster (and how's that for an oxymoron) would be CAUGHT DEAD in the East Village in 2010.

Grieve,

Wow. There's not much else I can say. The place looks grotesque. Love the beige walls. 7,000 a month and no shares. Guess they'll get a hipster banker.

I guess I really, really don't know the Village anymore . . .

i remember walking by this building many years ago with someone who pointed up to it and said, "i know the guy who owns that whole building. he's kind of crazy. and someday he'll sell it and be very rich." it all seemed mysterious at the time.

The building itself is a beauty. I don't particularly care for how this loft is decorated... All my stuff that I own would fit nicely in a corner.

'Live totally "outside the box" in every way'! "Wow your friends"! 'Live "way outside the box" and be a part of NY history!' Woooo!

Here's a hint to the tool who wrote these blurbs - if you live in ANY building in this city you are part of NY history. Paying 7 grand a month is not "living outside the box" - way, totally, or in any other manner. Paying 7 grand a month is totally moronic. But I guess you can't say that, huh?

So many hard wooden chairs...for $7K, I'd like at least one bean bag.

Ha! True, Goggla... But I'm so hesitant to sit in a beanbag chair these days given the Beanbag Bug Epidemic.

Hm, I'm trying to figure out if this was where I went to a party in '92 or '93. I guess it could have been another floor in the building -- do they all have the narrow tile hallways and Corinthian columns, anyone know? The other details in these pics are unrecognizable to me, but the hallway looked much the same back then (tho with missing tiles) -- the hall was memorably claustrophobic given how vast the rest of the living space was. The open loft part was romantically ratty looking, full of louche fleabitten victorian couches and crazy ginormous paintings, with chipped paint and battered hardwood floors. I was very young. I remember thinking ah, this is the NYC I moved here for...
