Looks like some amateur beekeeper lost control of their hive. I love bees and all they do for us, but this is why beekeeping is illegal in densely populated places like NYC.
Maybe bees like Bacon-Flavored envelopes too.
According to this NY Post article, swarms are common this time of year and happen when a hive becomes overcrowded, the queen leaves and half the bees in the hive follow her. Nice to know these little guys have found a good home already. http://www.dnainfo.com/20110531/lower-east-side-east-village/massive-bee-swarm-shuts-down-little-italy-sidewalk
this has happened every year and is shown in pictures in the papers and on tv news.there is only so much room in a hive and a swarm, with another queen, will look for a new home.bees don't flee careless beekeepers.
THE BEES ARE GOING POSTAL!!!
Beekeeping is no longer illegal in New York.
