As we first reported on Jan. 3, Gizmo is leaving its longtime home at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street for a new EV storefront.
Wife-and-husband owners Rosa Malmed and Hossein Amid told me that while they have not secured a new space yet for their sewing supply shop, they are still "in negotiations" for a new storefront...
The last day here is Feb. 28. Until then, expect markdowns on fabrics, trims, and zippers (50% off) and discounted prices on other merchandise.

Rosa said she opened the shop 32 years ago because she needed space for her alterations business.
Hossein told us that their rent has increased to a point where the couple can no longer afford to stay here.

I really hope they can negotiate a new space in the neighborhood. This is one of the last shops of its kind. I can't think of anywhere else to get fabric and sewing supplies.
I've relied on Gizmo for decades.
Please let us know the new address of this essential business.
I'm terrified they won't reopen. Please update us when they do.
Is there even ONE decent landlord in this area who would offer this wonderful shop the space they need at an affordable rent?
BTW, where are our elected officials - are they involved and acting to help here? They often seem to be available to "help" only certain types of businesses.
Gizmo is an important business in this neighborhood - we NEED them here! I'm hoping fervently that they will find a good new location nearby ASAP.

So sad to me, used to get material there, even used it for the windows at fab fannys. Wish only the best for them, always nice to me.
This is an essential business that I have needed on a number of occasions for all of their 32 years. Sewing notions are not something I need often as I stopped making my clothes years ago, but always so grateful they are there for a zipper, or ribbon, thread, etc. I sure hope they relocate close.
Seems like every time we lose an essential service we get another bar or restaurant we really DON'T need!
Dear Gizmo, while it might be too large, Cooper Square Mutual Housing Association has a storefront to let on the west side of Second Ave between 4th and 5th. Deeply affordable commercial leases. Call them! …or the real estate agent in charge. The contact number is in the window.
