About that really loud noise around 14th Street and Avenue B last night

[Not last night. But it could have been!]

From a reader who lives in Stuy Town near 14th Street and Avenue B:

Just wanted to see if anyone else had heard or contacted you yet about this really loud noise I experienced last night. Around 3:30 am I woke up from a deep sleep to the noise of what sounded like a jet literally hovering over my area. I woke up my boyfriend so that he could hear it too and so that I knew I wasn't dreaming. This noise went on consistently for about a half hour.

They didn't spot anything out the windows... Anyone else experience this? I'm going with UFO. No crackpot conspiracies, please.

I heard it too. It was loud enough on 10th and C to wake me up.

Live on C in the single digits and heard it loud and clear, very creepy. Think it might have been a repeat episode of this?: http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/incident-at-queens-plant-20111205-lgf

Also heard this and didn't see anything from my window.

I live on 9th and B and it woke me up. So weird! Someone figure it out!

Ditto.

Something to do at ConEd perhaps?

Man, I heard that too from 7th & C. First I thought it was a strong gust of wind, but it lasted so long that I figured it was a low flying plane! A few minutes later I heard sirens. It was freaky!

Was it a Lady Gaga album release party?

Maybe ET's coming back!

Glad to know I'm not nuts. SOmeone please clear this up. At 4th and C it sounded exactly like a jet engine. Steam release at Con Ed?

13th & A - heard it too. Went out on my balcony, but did see anything...cat's seemed undisturbed though, so I didn't think much more of it after that...

It's happened before- believe it is con ed plant. They release steam or something to that effect. Can last quite a long time. Or sometimes a generator goes out.

It sounded like the Con Ed plant did right before it caught fire in 2003. Maybe they were venting or something.

I don't think it lasted a half hour but I'm farther away than 14th & B. When the plant did catch fire that year I went over to 14/C to watch it.

Telling an internet comment section not to come up with crackpot conspiracies is like telling the sun not to rise...

Whatever this was, it doesn't sound as if anyone was injured so it might have just been a steam release of sorts, as has already been suggested.

@abrod

Haha. I wrote that after I said I thought that it was a UFO...

The crackpot-ier the better!

Unfortunately, I live right across the street from the plant on 13th & C. It was definitely Con Edison.

I'm also in Stuy Town around 14th and A. It was this VERY loud hum that went on for a long time. It sounded to me like it was coming from the Con Ed plant that I can see from my window, but the steam releases never sounded like that.

I heard it too! I'm on 7th Street and D. It was extremely loud that it woke me up with a headache. I was kind of scarred lol. Lasted a while but then the sound gradually faded towards con ed so it probably was that

Im in Stuy Town at 14th and C, directly across from the ConEd plant. When it woke me up, the steam coming out of the plant had multiplied a lot. About five fire trucks came about 15 minutes in, but they didn't do too much, and left about 10 minutes later, soon after the noise died down and the smoke release stopped. Don't know what happened- just saw this stuff out of my window.

Oh, good, I wasn't having a psychotic episode on 8th and B. Yup, it was really loud. Something about sounded slightly different than the usual "steam release" and the sirens immediately after were a bit alarming.

It's interesting that ConEd gets away with doing these "steam releases" without really explaining what's going on. Why did the fire trucks show up? Why do they have to do these "steam releases" in the middle of the night? Remind me again why they have to suddenly release steam?

I'm hoping it was a UFO. Take me with you!

Heard it on 12th and a and my friend heard it on 3rd and d. Why is this stuff never reported?
