Something Sweet is back open

We hadn't seen Something Sweet, the homespun bakery on the corner of First Avenue and East 11th Street, open at all so far in 2012. A few weeks ago, we called the shop, and received a "temporarily disconnected" message.

They've been known to close here or there through the years (death in the family, broken oven, vacation) without leaving a note taped to the gate. So we don't worry (too much)...

Last week, a reliable source said that the owners were having a few issues with the landlord... not to mention Verizon... the doors were semi-open last week, and we saw some people working inside...

In any event, the bakery reopened yesterday... another shop to appreciate...

I remember that bakery when it was known as "The Black Forest Bake Shoppe", and they baked, hands down, the best black forest cake in the city.

I started going to this bakery decades ago..started eating their vanilla mousse with strawberries--the handmade chocolates and the wonderful apple slice with apricot sauce..they have developed since then and I believe the owner's son took over some of the operations to bring the bakery into the more gentrified present. I love them and am glad they are back.

I love them too! Their dense chocolate torte is amazing, and half the price of a cake at many other bakeries. And I love that it's wrapped in the old-school red-and-white string. And I know the cookie topped with chocolate-dipped banana has its own crazed following (though I haven't had that one). And they are so freaking nice on Halloween, giving every little trick-or-treater a beautiful and delicious hand-decorated cookie -- can you imagine the amount of effort that takes? They're good neighbors. I wish them all the best.

Their chocolate-covered bananas on a crumbly cookie crust are reliably superb. Glad the lights are back on.
