A reader asks if others are in this Verizon situation

A longtime EV resident on East 10th Street west of Avenue B sent along the following email this morning... the resident hasn't had landline service since Oct. 29.

Two visits from tech this past weekend. Last report from tech was "no dial tone in equipment in backyard at 528 E 11th St," which connects to equipment in backyard on 10th St. There is service closer to Ave A.

Business on ground floor of my building was told by Verizon that service will be restored "by Dec 3." No neighbors in my building have landlines. No luck actually speaking to Verizon.

I'd like to find out if others are in this situation, and what we can do together. I'm a senior in a 5th fl walkup. My "emergency cell" is $.30/min, so I need a working landline.

Typical Verizon service. I was out 19 Days in Oct, restored for the storm, and out again from 11pm on the 2nd of Nov till yesterday (the 5th). And they expect me to pay my bill on top of that...I've not been able to arrange any credit for the time I was out. And my email is verizonabuser at gmail..shortened above

Yes, no landline, no Internet, no date as to when service will be restored. I know someone else in same situation who is also being double billed (for zero service), so watch out!

You might want to switch to cable landline with TWC.

My office in Tribeca has a Verizon line that's down. Supposed to be up tomorrow "sometime".

I can call out but can not receive calls. I was told by Verizon that my landline will be fixed by November 12th. I called them on the 2nd.

If this is all I have to suffer after all the misery that people went through with Sandy, I feel lucky.

I'm on 12th street a-b and yes our landline is kaput. I did speak to a person at Verizon and I could not help myself from a good chuckle when she told me the estimated time is Dec. 3rd. I have my cell as a fall back as much as I dislike using it (okay I'm old and fear transmitters against my brain).

I'm at 12th and A and my Verizon land line works but my neighbor's AT&T land line went down on Sunday. The way I understand land lines work is that no matter who your provider is, you have the same physical line to the phone center.

Yes Jill, all the same equipment. Verizon tech told me that when AT&T goes out, they, Verizon, are the ones that repair.

Someone mentioned TWC - they're out too. They got an automated dial-back once it's fixed because they're "currently experiencing a higher call volume than usual..."

I have a question - when we ask for a credit should it be from the time the power went out or from when the power is restored?

Verizon land line. Down. Verizon says "December".

I went to Verizons website to fill out a problem report and it said there was an outage in my area and they are committed fixing by DECEMBER 4TH !

And if they don't do it by Dec 4...tough luck.
They have the populous over a barrel!

We had the same issue on e5th st. after a fire some time ago (which damaged the box where all the wires come into) - many of the wires in the copper system are strewn across rooftops and form a tangled web in backyards ... less than 50% of the Verizon techs are competent, and since the fixing involves coordination between a tech and the central office, it's a real keystone cops situation ... you need to be persistent (and patient :).

We're at 12 St/Ave A - No landline service and only sporadic cell service.

DO NOT switch to TWC - not only are they out now, as mentioned above, but they have barely worked at all for me or any of my neighbors near 7th and C for the past 6 months.

My Verizon land line is out (2nd Ave & 4th) and I was also told Dec 4th AFTER they said someone was coming on Monday between 8 and 5 (and they never showed).

Thiing is, I had a 2nd line in my apt from the dial-up days. Mega-charges if I use to make calls, it was only for computers. THAT works. Verizon cannot say why a second line in the same apt. works.

I spoke to a tech in massachusettes today. They have routed Ny calls out of state. He said my building will be out till Dec 8th. Automated message says tomorrow.I am on D and 3rd.
Apparently the whole system is down. This company is the worst for getting things done in a timely manner. I waited months to get my internet back on 2 summers ago. They make no apologies and provide no alternatives. I have a landline for Emergencies that did not work during Sandy. I wish there were other options besides Verizon and Time Warner.
