Signs of life on the Eighth Street willow tree

Back in early December, we noted that workers had butchered cut back the willow tree here on Eighth Street near Avenue C... going from this...

... to this...

Anyway, we were assured by some willow tree authority types via e-mail that the tree would be just fine, that this was a healthy pruning, etc. (Not in such friendly terms though!) Anyway, we thought we'd check back in on it yesterday on the first official day of spring...

...showing some signs of life...

Melanie has some more willow tree shots at East Village Corner.

This makes me think of David Lee Roth's hair weave. EV Weave?

When you see how this tree recovers I'm going to say I told you so, and be smug about it.

That was one of my favorite trees in the city. What we have there now is a clockwork orange.
The tree will come back sure... but it looks to me like when it does come back it is going to be one top-heavy Willow tree... the surgeons left nothing in the middle to grow in. All of which means we can look forward to it snapping clean in half during a summer storm and crushing anything near it. ...Probably sometime around 2015. >>Google torque and turning moments.
Trees know the best way to engineer themselves against wind. This one is now a bad design.
