Reader reports: An early-morning police search on 5th Street and 6th Street

[Reader-submitted photo]

Several EVG readers asked about the presence of the NYPD helicopter hovering over parts of the neighborhood with a searchlight around 4:30-4:45 a.m.

There isn't anything from officials sources at the moment. Based on reader emails and the (sometimes reliable) Citizen app, police were searching for a burglary suspect. The Citizen app puts the scene of the incident at 519 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

The Citizen app had these updates... including request for the K-9 unit...

One reader put the helicopter in the air over parts of Fifth Street and Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B at between 20 to 30 minutes. The last report from Citizen listed the suspect as still at large. Will update this post if any more info becomes available.

Updated 11:45 a.m.

Thanks to the commenter who pointed out this tweet from this morning...

These helicopter$ are a massive wa$te of taxpayer $$$, and a horrible noi$e polluter. Did this wa$te of your $$$ lead to the thug'$ capture?
Didn't think $o.

How to get rid of them? Who is our council rep? Carolina Rivera?
Or do we have to call the governor? Anyone?

Looks like they might have caught the guy, as per their tweeting:

@NYPD9Pct

Great example last night of “If you see something, say something” when a building super alerted our #NYPD AntiCrime team of a suspicious person which lead to the arrest of a serial burglar in the #EastVillage.

@Anon 11:28. It's not a waste. They caught a SERIAL BURGLER thanks to such efforts.

@11:28am: I don't know about YOU, but *I* consider it a win if they got the perp, particularly if the perp happens to be a serial burglar!

Has anyone caught the president yet? I've got a good tip where to find him.

Thanks for keeping us save NYPD!

Seems a bit early to be calling him a serial burglar. Has the trial happened already? Basically the reason he was caught was because of a building super, not because of stupid NYPD helicopters. You guys really want NYC to be LA? I don't. If you're that scared, maybe first start by making sure the new people moving in don't buzz strangers into the building or allow them to follow them in.

How 'bout cops walk the beat instead of hide in the precinct, park, and patrol car?

BS that the 9th Precinct couldn't have a beat cop on each Avenue/north-south thoroughfare (Avenues A, B, C, and D; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Avenues; Bowery.) That's only nine cops. Now the streets: Houston to 14th Street for another 15 cops. So two dozen cops walking the beat thus a constant presence. If not 24 hours then 10pm to 6am when most crim occurs.)

Tell the bars, clubs, and bodegas to help out since most of the morons who cause trouble go there as no one who goes to Veselka causes any.

Anon @6:47PM has it right. The building super alerted the cops, who came to the building from the street. The helicopter was a useless taxpayer rip off. If it had happened twenty years ago, the perp would have been caught without a helicopter.

3:03pm back here. To anyone who thinks my tactic to fight crime is police state-like, BS. An officer walking the beat on every East Village avenue and street means a constant street-level presence. If what I call "street eyes" are also employed i.e. people who live in apartments on the street who keep an eye on what's outside even if just for a moment, that makes the streets even safer. Get as many people as possible to get Ring so they can see who's in the lobby.
