A car-motorcycle collision on 1st Avenue

Several readers reported a serious-looking collision this afternoon between a car and a motorcyle on First Avenue at Seventh Street...

From a reader report (thanks Bill!): "A black car with an Arizona plate hit a motorcycle going north on 1st, which was in the left lane. The car swerved from the right lane into the motorcycle."

In a positive sign, another reader said that the motorcyclist was moving as he was loaded into an ambulance. We'll update this post if any further information becomes available.

Thank you to Derek Berg for the photo...

Cut a moving lane, widen the sidewalks on 1st Av, create a safer, slower road.

Don't allow people from Arizona to drive in NYC.

@9:08pm: Let's go back to horse-and-buggy days ... very ecologically correct, and hardly any danger of anyone going too fast. And think of the uses for all that manure. Perfect solution!

Meanwhile, I hope the motorcycle rider will be OK.

I hope the man on the motorcycle is OK.

Traffic seems very Wild West recently, particularly those silent but deadly delivery bikes. There isn't a flat surface they haven't taken over.

This is the same traffic violation that killed cyclist Kelly Hurley two blocks north of here https://evgrieve.com/2017/04/rip-kelly-hurley.html

Drivers know you can't pull across seven lanes of traffic to make a left turn. The fact that we can't stop drivers from using this kind of move is very depressing. These avenues can't be used as stunt tracks or empty highways, there is mixed traffic around (including vulnerable pedestrians) that has to be respected.

Having 3 moving lanes in the middle of a residential neighborhood (plus a bus lane and left turn lanes) will always create dangerous situations. Narrow the street, make it safer.

I saw this happen. The motorcycle was in the bike lane heading north, he went by me and the AZ car was making a left onto 7th from the main lanes on 1 Ave. I don't think he meant to hit the guy, he was making a slow turn. Bad timing. And many drivers don't know to look down the bike lane when going left - made even more complicated now by the outdoor dining areas set up, which make visibility tricky.

Luckily an ambulance was at the light, so they just got out and tended to the injured man. They also caught it all on camera. The EMT driver and the driver of the car got into a heated argument, and ultimately, the driver was screaming in rage. Ugly sight.

@choresh it's an avenue. There are a lot of people in NYC going a lot of places. That makes no sense.
