Whole Earth Bakery needs your help on St. Mark's Place

If you're a fan of Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen on St. Mark's Place (like me), then you may want to know about this... there's currently a crowdsourcing campaign underway to help the Bakery raise money... like many businesses, they took a hit following Superstorm Sandy... You can read more about the campaign and the incentives at Lucky Ant.

Here's a video with owner Peter Silvestri, who ran the bakery with his mother starting in 1978. He has been on St. Mark's Place since 1991.

I loved this place - until I started being treated with increasingly poor customer service. No one comes to the counter half the time, and on two occasions, I watched someone prep my vegan pizza by pulling apart the pieces by his hands and leaving it on the countertop - after just cleaning things off the floor and not washing his hands. We need great vegan places in the neighborhood - but this place needs to literally clean up its act to stay.

Is it too callous to suggest that they have a bake sale?

I'll show myself out...

Anonymous 8:43: I've experienced just the opposite. Once you come to the counter, if they are in the kitchen working, you only need to let them know you are there. Pete is the friendliest most decent person you will ever meet and accommodating.

When I wanted an avocado sandwich (only $5.50!), he was sold out, so he made me a fresh one from scratch. I was stuffed.

The workers wear gloves when touching food and the place is SPOTLESSLY CLEAN. And, Pete uses a multiple filter system to get the cleanest water you'll ever see in NYC.

Pete is dealing with all kinds of crap being laid on him by his landlord, so one of the best things we who care can do for him is to patronize his bakery as often as possible.

Remember: A Dollar Is A Vote, and YOU get to decide who stays in business and who doesn't by where you spend your money. I vote for Pete EVERY day....

Anonymous 8:43: Pete cannot hear well. You have to shout out loud to get his attention or you'll be standing there waiting for him to notice you.
I love this place and hope that it will survive!!!
