Enjoying a late-afternoon snack in Tompkins Square Park

Hey, what's everyone looking at the hawk for....?

Oh! Uh, ack?

Yesterday afternoon... courtesy of EV Grieve contributor Bobby Williams.

Bob Arihood has another great shot of the hawk's feast here.

Is that an artisanal rat?

PETA is going to be pissed. "Setting hawks upon rats is depraved, sadistic, and entirely illegal. It constitutes an explicit violation of New York’s anti-cruelty laws."

He or she was eating a squirrel last week. I'm sympathetic to the argument that squirrels are just rats with cute bushy tails, but really, this rat-eating is to be encouraged. Thanks to their patron The Pigeon Lady and their vast network of tunnels, the rats are winning the war in the northwest corner of the park.

Nature, red in tooth and claw...and beak. (With apologies to Alfred Lord Tennyson.)

Yay for the hawk! Those rats were getting uppity when they were snowed under. Time for some payback!

The LES Hawk, who is this EV one's baby i think, was hawkeying my balcony tree. I heard he/she moved to Sara D park thankfully. I am all for the life of all creatures and get the circle of life blah blah but I just don't want to see him/her outside my window doing this to a squirrel I "know". Oh yeah the Hawks are alll gorgeous until someone gets eaten.

We need a cool name for this hawk plus a DVD Documentary. EV/LES versus Fifth Ave? No contest.
