Not such a lonely Planet: Broadway's iconic comic book-toy store would like more space

I recently noticed the listing for 840 Broadway at 13th Street...

Which is home to Forbidden Planet — one of the largest sellers of comic books, graphic novels, science fiction, toys and associated collectibles in the world.

Uh-oh! Trouble in the Republican Clone Army? What's this all about?

Jeff Ayers, Forbidden Planet's manager/buyer, sent along this e-mail to my query:

Actually, we're just testing the waters, trying to possibly find a new, bigger (yet local!) space for the shop. We need to expand and can no longer do so in this space.

As much as I like this corner we're just outgrowing this location. Thanks for the support and the interest. We're stickin' around.

At the risk of sounding like a pedantic dork, this spot is NOT the original site of Forbidden Planet (which was, of course, across B'way on the corner of 12th ... the space that is now No Difference Shoes. More here:

I was there the week they opened in the old location -- as I recall, I avoided opening day itself because of the crowds. No, seriously, the place was packed! (I think there might have been a comic book convention in town that weekend?) Even after fifteen years since they moved one block, I still think of this as the "new" location.

I worked there for a year..Jeff was there..it was about 12 years ago..They had just moved from across the street..Fun, crazy job! This homeless guy used to read Archie Comics in the back of the store and mutter "Betty AND Veronica? Archie, you dog! you dontknow how good you got it!"

The current location is great, but yeah really cramped, they really need more space. Please don't go far!
