NYC unemployment rate now 10.6 percent

From the Times:

The unemployment rate in New York City jumped in December to 10.6 percent, its highest level in nearly 17 years, as hotels, museums and builders eliminated jobs and hiring remained weak in most other businesses, the State Labor Department said Thursday.

Its still easier to find a job in New York than most other places.

This is a problem. Culturally and economically, we need some of the recent transplants to return home. The unemployed ones are probably better off falling back on their orignal support networks. But you don't want to return to local economies like Michigan and Florida that are even worse than here.

I see where California's unemployment rate is now 12.4 percent.
