Meanwhile, before we christen Avenue D the next Greenpoint...

At 401 E. Eighth St. just a few steps off Avenue D, a new six-story apartment building was slated to go up in this lot...

However, the lot appears to be abandoned now... I haven't seen any activity here in months...

Shiming Tam Architects are listed with the DOB. A search of their site doesn't turn up any plans for this space.

And some photos of the lot from this past October...Because, dear reader, I enjoy nothing more than taking photos of empty lots.

Would be such a nice space for a community garden.

I live at 119 Ave D (you can actually see my window in one of these pictures. I've been complaining about this vacant lot for ever. When I first moved into 119 in 2006 this lot was used by the owners of the store on the 1st floor to park their cars. Construction began there a while back (maybe a year and a half?) but then halted once it was discovered that the land was too damp to build on. For MONTHS there was a giant hole in the ground there. Not only was it unsightly it was dangerous, as it meant that our fire escape from 119 didnt end on ground but into a giant hole.

They eventually came and filled in most of the hole, though part of it still has a trench filled with construction materials. However the site is STILL a complete mess and that fence is downright dangerous (the barbed wire often hangs down at eye level).

EV Grieve, I love the blog and wish there were something we could do about this lot. Its filled with trash and gross and makes me depressed every time I look out my window.

Thanks for calling some attention to it!

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the comments. Damn, sorry to hear all this. I've seen the swamps that form here after a rain... think the owners would have tested this before they decided to build a six-stroy high-rise....

Yup, they definitely should have. I'm perfectly happy not to have the noise of the construction waking me up at 7AM as it was for a few months, but I just wish they'd either come finish the job or clean up their mess. It was a much nicer vacant lot before the came and dug it all up, at least then it still had grass.

I've called 311 to complain about them multiple times and they get citations stapled to the gate semi often but it makes no difference. Oh well...
