Meanwhile, right around the corner...

...After checking out Chico's mural, I saw that the shabby liquor store on Houston and B that I like so much wasn't open last night...

I haven't been here in some time... I forget the woman's name who runs the place. I enjoy watching her reaction to some fancypants asking her if they have any, say, really buttery California chardonnays whose grapes were harvested on hillsides composed of Kimmeridgian marl, limestone and chalk. Her reaction is usually either, "WHAT?" or "WHY WOULD WE HAVE THAT."

Figure this is one of those doomed corners...so I'll often take a photo of the storefront. Come to think of it, I took these shots on a Friday afternoon in the fall, and they weren't open then either...

I wouldn't worry. She has kept an increasingly sporadic schedule for the last ten years. c

This place is always open when I walk by on my way someplace else, but never when I want to buy my 40.

A bad thing that the liquor stores which only sold Thunderbird through a slot in bullet proof glass are dying out?

The romantics here will say yes. When I moved into the neighborhood the only exception to the slot rule was the liquor store on Avenue A, corner of 5th. Now there's a bunch of, like, normal wine and liquor outlets. An improvement. Er...yes.

The Puertos only want cheap Thunderbird. This place will always be in business as long as there are still plenty of them around

The owner has passed away. Chico will be painting a memorial mural for her family (soon-if it ever gets above freezing!). He has permission from her son-in-law to keep painting murals on the building. All is not lost.

Thanks, anon. I'm sorry to hear that the owner passed away.

Will the store remain open?
