EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: Twister reminds us of its froyo arrival; the Stage is on vacation

As noted back in January, more FroYo is on the way... on Second Avenue near East Seventh Street at the former Spa Belles location ... a new Twister banner recently arrived as a reminder... and now they're hiring...

-----

A few storefronts to the north... you may have noticed that EVG favorite the Stage is on a vacation... will reopen on Tuesday...

-----

Last Friday, we spotted a temporary sign for the incoming Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken... the real thing arrived several days ago on Second Avenue and East First Street... fittingly mall-like for the space...

-----

Taqueria Diana is taking over the space that Cheep's Pita Creations had on Second Avenue near St. Mark's Place... Fork in the Road recently had more details on the place, which is run by a California native who was most recently a manager at The Meatball Shop...

-----

And several people have asked us about the Boca Chica space on First Avenue and East First Street... workers removed the BC signage a few weeks ago... Boca Chica closed in late February... Francis Derby, who was part of the opening team of wd~50 under Chef Wylie Dufresne and a one-time sous chef at Momofuku Ssam Bar, is the executive chef at the restaurant opening here called Golden Cadillac.

Another fro yo place with flying feces in their logo. I'm starting to see a trend. The Summer of Flying Feces!

I really have to admit. I'm actually surprised the whole fro-yo thing seems to still be going so strong. Figure it's gotta dye off eventually. Just thought it would have occurred sooner.

That's what the fro-yo looks like coming out.

To whom it may concern,
in this very space at one point was probably the most integrated (both racially and socially) East Village Bar. This was from about 1978 to maybe 1983 or so. There has not been a place like this ever again in the neighborhood, where elderly black & white folks would mingle with younger black & white folks. In other words...we have REGRESSED, 'cause now the area is overrun by douche bags. Just giving you a small history lesson. PS: The place was called "First On First".

I like the design of Taqueria Diana. I hope the food lives up to the restaurant's exterior/interior!

Golden Cadillac boosters may have spoken too soon about the food side of their new enterprise. Fran Derby doesn't think he was ever involved - http://ny.eater.com/archives/2013/04/coming_attractions_193.php Sounds like maybe it's the old pretend to be a restaurant but really, surprise, surprise, be yet another bar. Sounds like it may be a snazzo cocktail bar but, affordable? Maybe not so much if the business http://www.cocktailkingdom.com of one of the owners, Greg Boehm, is anything to go by. Take a browse around. For $299 you can get that ice ball maker you've always wanted. It seems to make them one at a time so you may not want to toss out your $2 ice tray just yet. Seriously, folks.

Keeping with the history lesson: The population of this area peaked in 1910, at a little over 500,000. Over the next seven decades the population declined by almost 350,000, leaving it at apx. 150,000 in 1980. The "douchebags" came after the neighborhood had already emptied out.
What does integrated "socially" mean?

and here we go... another of the EV's last bastions of real local culture GONE. i'll miss Boca Chica. they had great food, drinks and live latin music by some of EV's original residents.
