More about the 2Bn2C sculpture garden

We've written before about how much we enjoy the empty lot on East Second Street between Avenue B and Avenue C ... And in recent weeks, the lot has continued to go under some transformations... featuring new plantings and artwork...

Unbeknownst to us, 2Bn2C sculpture garden now has a website...

Per the site, the revamped sculpture garden is being directed by Nature and Ken Cro-Ken, an ecosystem artist who lives nearby. At the site, Ken explains his art philosophy ... and encourages people to share their photos of the garden.

The site is just getting under way... and there will be a few events in the garden, such as a performance by oboist Matt Sullivan later this month...

Get an eyefull while you can. the east end of the block is being preyed upon by big developers. The gas station that anchors the block at C was bought months ago by a developer planning 48,000 square feet of market rate residential development. That sent the appraised value of the small tenement next to it soaring up 2 MILLION dollars literally overnight. The third building west from there is being rehabbed with a 'penthouse' being added. The empty lot might as well be a dinosaur.

I miss all the sculpture lots we used to have, like (if anyone remembers) the tower of garbage, fences decorated with pinwheels, stuffed animals and random flotsam and jetsam of the streets. I sometimes can't believe they were ever there.

Hi All,
This is Nature's "Assistant Director" of the space, Ken Cro-Ken. Yes, the garden is in the spirit of the 1980's and before; when art and found objects was an equal partner to nature's display. AHHHH, those years... A wonderful time and a tough time too. (Keeping it real.)
People but objects with character by the gate. Little presents to add to the space. How neat is it that someone sees an object and says- HEY, let's bring it to 2Bn2C! This part of the L.E.S. in the E.V. / ALPHABET CITY is still a wonderful place!
The website has a guest book and I hope that after passing by, many will be led to go to the GUEST BOOK on the site and write a few words. I know the owner (91 y.o.) would really be touched that locals enjoy what they see. She always wanted to do this and when I pick her up and take her there for a short visit, at least a few people stop and offer kind words to her. It really adds something wonderful to her day.
Keep the E.V. green! It is truly a unique area. I little birdie in garden told me that there might very well be a electro-acoustic performance by oboist MATT SULLIVAN on July 27th!!! EARTH, ART, MUSIC... What more could you ask for...? Oh, maybe a light weight chair to view from the walk. We have a stage now that will help viewing. For liability reasons, (being a privately owned space), it can't be completely opened to the public... but I am doing my best to make this and future events enjoyable and comfortable. Let us see what the future can bring! ENJOY THE SUMMER OF 2013!!!
