Jum Mum closed for a 'new look' on St. Mark's Place

Paper has covered the windows at Jum Mum at 5 St. Mark's Place these past few days... giving the impression that the quick-serve Thai-Chinese restaurant near Third Avenue is a goner.

However, it's just a renovation (not a "closed for renovation"). According to the restaurant's Facebook page:

We will be temporarily closed for renovation ... Hold on to your VIP cards WE ARE COMING BACK. Getting ready for a new look this fall!

I can imagine it's hard for a business there that doesn't sell drug paraphernalia or sunglasses!

You need a VIP card to get steamed dumplings?

Hi Ken,

It's really a loyalty card. I have one and I'm no VIP...!

After you fill your card with stamps you get something to eat for free, what exactly it is I'm not sure, but I seem to remember you can choose what it is, with limitations.

@ East Village Today: I always wondered about all those sun-glass places. How can they afford these exorbitant rents down here. I bought an 8 dollar pair, but that's now gonna be it for the next 18 months. (Unless I lose 'em at some gin mill, which, admittedly, has happened a few times) I guess hope springs eternal.

i ate here last year at some point and remember thinking it was grossly overpriced. this was before the 3 buns = $7 promotion that seems to have been too little too late.

also, those sunglass places typically only really rent about 10 square feet behind a metal rolling door. their rents cant be that exorbitant.
