Wow, a rally against hate. If the Democratic Party didn't run such an inept campaign, we wouldn't be at this point. If they didn't turn into Republicans by getting into bed with big business, we wouldn't be in this mess. If they didn't forget the middle class blue collar workers we would be- well, you know where. And look who's there at the rally Ms. Mendez who betrayed her community by selling us out at Astor Plaza. All politics are local, Rosie. Take care of your own backyard. Rally against the mess at Astor not the mess at the airports!

@cmarrtyy I think you need to reset your moral barometer if you equate ugly Astor Plaza with shutting the door to refugees from countries our own government has helped destabilize.

Astor Plaza? There were community residents involved in the planning of Astor Plaza. There was an entire task force created for Astor Plaza. Rosie has been in office for 11 years and is a great champion for services in district 2.

1:58 well put. Everyone should just chill out. Just a friendly reminder there is a huge difference between what is legal and illigal immigration. Media and politicians are great at blurring the lines.

Rosie is no friend of the community. On the whole she has done the bidding of the Dem Party to help monetize the EV for the real estate industry. We need green space not a concrete platform for business interests.

There is nothing wrong with my moral compass. But there is something wrong with yours if you think immigrants are worth the outrage. On a scale of 1 to 10 it's at the bottom of my outrage meter. We live in a country where our voting rights are under threat. Medicare/Medicaid are being allowed to die. And social security will be privatized. No, I damn well know where the outrage belongs.

> Astor Plaza?

I'm born here and been around as long as most and I don't mind Astor Plaza. Why can't everything be like it was when you were young and beautiful and got invited to all the cool parties?

Rosie Mendez has been a friend to this community regardless of where this purity troll is coming from. Go squat somewhere in the rust belt if you must chase the edgy edge.

cmarrtyy: Those things you care about - we all care about. You're no bigger a champion of those things then anyone else. Came and join us - the people need you!

" But there is something wrong with yours if you think immigrants are worth the outrage."

Such glorious, glorious privilege.

Will there be a pop up hardcore show to warm up the crowd

5:17 moral compass? - is that what's missing if you think immigrant rights are not worth our outrage? immigrants are merely people that came here to escape from other countries, as did our ancestors, or to find those gold paved streets. EVERY american is descended from immigrants unless they are american indians.
trampling on human rights and the constitution are not petty actions. this is the start of taking control - it's where we become "a country where our voting rights are under threat. Medicare/Medicaid are being allowed to die. And social security will be privatized..."
say goodby to democracy - this is just the beginning.

Taking in people from countries you have wantonly destroyed is suicidal.

March against hate? Does anyone truly believe that if someone hates you, or someone you know or love, that your marching in the streets yelling demeaning names and holding signs with epitaphs whose only purpose is to inflame your enemies will be a productive use of your time and effort? Only an insane person does the same thing over and over and expects a different outcome. If you want to end hate, go do something nice for someone who you think hates you. Go extend a helping hand to someone who is in need. Help raise them up and show them what is good, not scream at them and tell them what is wrong with them. There are many old sayings that are full of wisdom and one of them is that you catch more flies with honey. So stop flinging your feces around like primates in the wild. Eventually you have to walk through all of that and you know what? you just end up smelling bad.

Don't bad mouth Rosie! I don't know where you are getting your "alternative facts" but Rosie is doing more to preserve affordable housing than most. I don't see her as a "friend" to any landlord.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 11:54. Well said.

Re 2:51 A pop up hardcore show would be a great idea loud and fast

Rosie Mendez has betrayed us on every point. This shifts the emphasis on a national issue while she has ignored local issues. It's taken her practically her whole term to stand with residents on landlord harassment. We need to preserve affordable housing in the neighborhood not look away at HDFC co-op shareholders who have used flip tax money and and cash transactions towards upscaling the buildings, raising co-op sale prices to practically market rate, and changing the demographic, all so they will be able to sell their units on the open market. All of this which is being subsidized with my tax paying dollars for affordable housing. It's greed.

Anonymous said...

And what exactly should flip tax be used for of not for improving the building?

Jared said...

I hate hate.
I'll be there. We'll be part of the community's and park's heritage of diversity and human rights.

The flip tax was put in place as a deterrent so that people wouldn't use their co-op purchase as an investment. But people have figured out a way to do just that, by purchasing units with their parents money, staying for a couple of years, then selling the unit at a tidy profit even after paying the flip tax.

The shareholders have allowed this to happen with all cash transactions, gifting and generous subletting policies. What that does is upscale the buildings in terms of better amenities, and raises the value of the apartments. These units are supposed to be an affordable home ownership opportunity for working people, and they have figured out a way to abuse the system. There are approximately 100 buildings in the East Village mostly in 10009.

This BULLSHIT demo in a contained area where folks can be controlled is political opportunism at its best.

DO NOT TRUST demos hosted or arranged by incumbent politicos who do NOTHING for us and EVERYTHING for real estate vultures and corporate interlopers that fuel spiraling hyper-hyper gentrification. Such demos are an effort to gain political legitimacy and create the appearance of relevance, channeling citizens' energy and outrage for their own ends, resulting in INEFFECTIVE activism.

BOYCOTT AND REMOVE THE BASTARDS who screwed Sanders in the primaries in favor of Clinton last April who now attempt to lead the opposition to Trump!! This includes DeBlasio, Stringer and Viverito.

BOYCOTT AND REMOVE THE BASTARDS who serve the real estate industry and their banksters on Wall Street by providing tax payer subsidies, tax abatements and rezoning low and middle income sections of the city to facilitate over-development of "luxury" housing for the super-wealthy who pay NO taxes, while PRETENDING to "represent" us!! This includes DeBlasio, Stringer and Mendez.

Do not rally or march with corrupt political scumbags who seek to take advantage of our righteous anger toward Trump!!

Anonymous said...

Wow 6:22 why so angry this is a demo this is a city there will be many more on this issue there must be some other demo's for you to voice your concern after all this is a right

Anonymous said...

Lot of delicate butterflies on here who would rather we not say anything so that they don't have to feel bad that they made the wrong choice. Eventually you'll join us, because eventually Trump will destroy something you hold sacred.

Anonymous said...

The neighborhood already is destroyed and what is sacred is where everyone congregated. Any chance to flood TSP. Yes, all of us are against this, and also it's separate from the reprehensible behavior around here. They have totally screwed the East Village. This just pools everything together allowing for more evasive bullshit. The leadership around here is just a lazy sack of loser shit. This is totally opportunistic.

So you think folks critical of this rally voted for Trump? Give me a break, that's just dumb. Kinda like the person who told me when I voted for Bernie I was a sexist. Every Democrat in this town is using the spectre of Trump for their own political purpose. Look at the elected officials at this rally, folks who do nothing. Brewer opposes the save small business act amongst other things. Ridiculous
