A reminder about maintaining social distance and wearing a mask on 9th Street
These signs arrived a little earlier in the week on Ninth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue ... courtesy of the 9th Street A-1 Block Association...
Thanks to William Klayer for the photos!

It’s either or, btw. You need to be distanced, or you need a mask when you can’t be distanced. Zero reason to wear a mask if no one is anywhere near you.
@9:02am: True, you don't need to wear a mask if no one is near you, but a runner or biker could be upon you very quickly. Much easier to just wear the mask.
Tell it to the hundreds of thousands of protesters across the nation. Spreading the protesters out will cause greater awareness as well!!! More people in more neighborhoods.
In the East Village it is nearly impossible to be further than six feet at any point in time during daytime hours. We avoid people as best we can, but it means constantly crossing streets or walking in them, and this is with small kids. When we are forced to walk within six ft of ppl who don't wear masks, we feel scared and angry. They could cough or sneeze or yell at any point and the stress we feel isn't fair. It's selfish to not wear a mask when you're in a crowded neighborhood. If my little kids can do it, anyone can. It's not too much to ask.
We all know most of our sidewalks don’t allow 6 feet between people. Thus you need a face covering. There are very few places in our neighborhood you can keep 6 ft away from people. If you choose not to cover, then YOU should be the one getting out of the way, stepping into the street, not the other way. Oh on another point, there is no special exemption for people carrying coffee in one hand.
Its hard to believe that people still refuse to wear a mask. "Either/or" basically is selfishness because of NYC density. I now will walk out into the street to avoid these a-holes charging into me. I'm older with immune system issues. I hope by me wearing a mask it will protect me. I'm done playing "mask police". The jerks who refuse are welcome to kill their own grandma. But, that would probably not concern them either.
We are in this together (except you?). Dont be a Pence / Where a mask.
NYTimes has a big article on this: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/30/health/running-exercising-masks-coronavirus.html
In general, researchers agree that air circulation outdoors seems to strongly inhibit transmission of the coronavirus. In a study of more than 7,300 coronavirus cases in China, just one was connected to outdoor transmission.
Nearly 1,300 health care professionals signed an open letter addressing people's concerns over the risks of acquiring and/or transmitting COVID-19 while out protesting white supremacy and they unanimously agree that:
"[A]s public health advocates, we do not condemn these gatherings as risky for COVID-19 transmission."
I don't understand how social distancing mandates and stay-home orders could be so casually tossed aside given the crushing severity of this pandemic but I also sincerely doubt that that many doctors and epidemiologists, etc. could be wrong or just pulling our legs. Maybe it's the justness of the cause that causes Corona to stand down as we stand up. Worth thinking about.
