GNC closing its remaining East Village outpost

With nearly $1 billion in debt, GNC filed for bankruptcy last week, announcing that it may close nearly 1,200 shops.

The East Village outpost of the vitamin and dietary supplement company is one of those that will shut down. Closing signage is up at the location on First Avenue at 13th Street.

A GNC closed on Third Avenue in NYUville in July 2018.

Thanks to Pinch for the photo!

these closures would have happened anyway. covid just accelerated the process. places were barely surviving before.

Can't say I blame them.

yeah, GNC leaving the east village is not the sign of EV becoming a ghost town. it has always been nutty how many of these places are around town in the first place. Hopefully we'll see a small business pop-up in its place

Hopefully. Then gentrifiers would leave, residential and commercial rents would go down, new businesses would come in, new New York would be born, maybe...

Let's hope; one thing I sorely miss are the quirky small businesses like "Dr. Psycho's Wax Museum" (record store, on Tompkins square park, of all places,) "Finyl Vinyl" (another record store,) or "Howdy Do" on 7th street, a curio shop that sold one-of-a-kind items like a can of "Phyllis Diller Chili" and a blouse that must have been a waitress blouse from one of the Bob's Big Boy restaurants; its print was all little red line drawings of the Big Boy character on a white blouse with a bow.

I'm remembering all the truly interesting—and affordable—stores we've lost, and I must admit I'm getting a little verklemt.
