Wash day for Temperance Fountain in Tompkins Square Park

Photo this morning by Steven.

As EVG first reported at the time, the fountain arrived here in August 1891, when people were squandering their money on 5-cent cups of coffee.

Read about the history of the fountain here.

Wish they'd do that with the park benches as well. (Yuck) Or at least the ones that aren't rotted away.

Since the subject came up is it possible perhaps we've all seen enough of the recurring cardboard art for what is at essence promotional material for a private concern?

I disagree. I enjoy seeing the cardboard art. It contributes to the unique creative atmosphere of the park. It also gets removed and cleaned-up each time, from what I can tell.

How do we buy a tribute stone?

Call 311 or Parks Department. I know someone who bought one.
