Updating: What's open in the East Village for takeout and delivery

First draft as of 9 a.m. on March 17. Here are East Village cafes-restaurants open for takeout and delivery — many with contact-free options. Yes, this is an incomplete list. But it is a start. We'll continue to update throughout the day. Additions are welcome via the comments and email. Find the in-progress list of closures here.

Please call ahead or check the restaurant's website or social media for updates. All this is subject to change. Several of the vendors we talked with we're unsure how long they'd be able to stay open. Thanks to Lola Saénz and Steven for the reporting!

Updated 3/21: Continuing to update. Some of the information below may be outdated. Several restaurant owners told us that they have decided not to continue at this time. One restaurant owner said he had two orders the entire day.

An afternoon with Cáit O’Riordan

Photos and text by Stacie Joy

For the past few years, musician Cáit O’Riordan has called the East Village home. She's headed back now to her native Ireland as the New Year begins.

I've spotted her everywhere from the free concerts in Tompkins Square Park to the Drag March on Ninth Street. During her time here, she graciously met Caitlin, a part-time employee at Confectionery on Ninth Street, whose mother named her after O'Riordan, who played bass for Celtic-punk legends the Pogues.

I've appreciated her adventurous spirit while in NYC. Back on a warm early fall day, she agreed to explore a little of the East Village with me. We each found a few new places to visit.

After lunch at Superiority Burger on Ninth Street, we headed over to Gem Spa on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place, where owner Parul Patel and O’Riordan talked ...

We stopped by Uliana Hair Studio on Ninth Street for O'Riordan to book an appointment and, where I am told, Jimi Hendrix had an apartment in the mid-1960s while he was a session player and backup musician ...

O’Riordan browsed through the well-curated records at Limited to One on 10th Street. While rooting through the rare punk bin, this Anti-Flag compilation caught her attention ...

Continuing down 10th Street, we looked around at Crystal’s Garden ...

And there was this photogenic hearse by the Tenth Street Church of Christ as we walked to Tompkins Square Park...

In the Park, we ran into local resident Ceasar Noel Soto, who was featured in an Out and About in the East Village piece on EVG here...

We eventually made our way to the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space on Avenue C between Ninth Street and 10th Street and examined the exhibitions...

We visited several community gardens, including the Los Amigos Community Garden on Third Street between Avenue B and Avenue C where we received the OK to sample of the garden's summer peaches...

At Dancin’ Tastebuds, located inside Ben’s Deli on Avenue B near Third Street, we sampled the tastebudgasm sauce from Chef Lioness ...

We stumbled upon pawn shop East Village Buyers on Third Street near A, and met the artist, Gus Weiss, who painted their nifty windows ...

O’Riordan will be back for 10 weeks each spring and winter for her seasonal gig at the Irish Arts Center. We look forward to seeing her again!

Brasserie Saint Marc debuts today on 2nd Avenue

At long last the longtime-coming Brasserie Saint Marc is opening at 136 Second Ave. here between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

Florence Fabricant offered up preview on the restaurant, which is expected to open today, at the Times ...

An ambitious project, four years in the making, from Karin Agstam, a model and actor who owned the restaurant Station in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is ready to open. Ms. Agstam was so smitten by the arched, brick-walled East Village space that she was determined to make it a restaurant. Now, it has a spacious bar area up front and a passage along an open kitchen that leads to a pair of dining rooms, one of which features Champagnes, and a garden.

And...

Glittering chandeliers and white marble-top tables brighten the space. As for the menu, the executive chef Frederick Piccarello, an experienced hand who was once at the Sign of the Dove uptown, has gone classic French. Escargots? Rillettes? Coquilles Saint-Jacques? Frisée aux lardons? Onion soup? Duck confit? Moules frites? Steak au poivre? Ms. Agstam’s favorite bouillabaisse? They’re all there. The menu also tips its hat to the neighborhood’s Eastern European roots with borscht and pierogies, and to vegans with an Impossible Burger.

There isn't any mention in the preview of the space being put to use to host meetings and events by organizations from the local Ukrainian community. This was a selling point when the applicants appeared before Community Board 3 for a liquor license in July 2018

According to the meeting's official CB3 minutes:

The applicants furnished five letters from organizations and businesses, including credit unions and a school within the local Ukrainian community, with a combined constituency of thousands of people, and seven people appeared to speak on behalf of the applicant who either operated a Ukrainian business within the building or the immediate neighborhood or through the Ukrainian community, each of whom cited the benefit of adding a full-service restaurant that could host events, meetings and dinners for local Ukrainian organizations...

As we've noted, a lot of work has gone into getting the former Bar 82 (RIP March 2013) into restaurant shape. The construction plywood went up here on May 6, 2016.

Goodbye Dojo

That's it for Dojo on West Fourth Street at Mercer... it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the restaurant was not going to reopen after sitting vacant following a Sept. 13 DOH inspection that closed its doors. (You can read the previous post here.)

The inspection turned up 62 violation points, which appeared to be correctable items before any follow-up visit.

In any event, the contents of Dojo have been removed ... and the signage has come down.

And a little cut-and-paste Dojo history:

Dojo began in the East Village, first with the Ice Cream Connection on St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue in March 1970. Tony Yoshida's Japanese-inspired vegetarian cuisine came along in 1974. And via the Dojo website:

In 1982, Dojo took over the space next door and expanded even more. Then in 1991, Dojo in the West Village was created – both Dojo East and Dojo West were favorite local gems. Unfortunately in 2007, Dojo East was closed down due to high rent. BUT Dojo West is still going strong!

I posted the news on Twitter yesterday. Seems as if a lot of people have Dojo memories.

...and even if you frequented the place...

Incoming: Gala on 3rd Avenue, Nunoodle Noodle + Bar on 1st Avenue

Here's a quick look at two more of the applicants on this month's CB3-SLA meeting agenda...

---

A Chinese restaurant called Gala is in the works for the former Blue 9 Burger space at 92 Third Ave. between 12th Street and 13th Street.

The applicants are seeking a beer-wine license. The questionnaire (find it at the CB3 website here) lists 15 tables accommodating 30 guests along with a five-seat bar. The proposed hours are 5 p.m. to midnight Sunday-Thursday; until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The CB3-SLA meeting is tonight at 6:30 in the Public Hotel, 17th Floor, Sophia Room, 215 Chrystie St. between Houston and Stanton.

---

We got a partial reveal back in April at what's coming to the under-renovation 130 First Ave., the former Rainbow Music just south of St. Mark's Place.

According to the application on the CB3 website (PDF here), the owners of Nunoodle Noodle + Bar on Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst are opening an outpost on First Avenue.

The paperwork shows a restaurant with seven tables seating 20 guests with proposed daily hours of 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The applicants were on the agenda for the June 11 SLA committee meeting (a beer-wine license), though they were not required to appear before the board.
