... and yesterday...
And yesterday afternoon .... workers were putting the plywood back...

And per Tom in the comments:
Last summer I had heard from the manager of Petes-A-Place that they weren't planning to reopen until October. I wondered why it would take that long. But I guess it's understandable if they're going to do zero work during the winter.

I live right here and walked past a bunch of times this weekend and couldn't help but stop and stare wistfully, because the burned down, vacant space is a convenient footprint for a high-rise on a very desirable corner. I pray to god the deli and pizza place come back. We need them. We do NOT need another slapdash "luxury" shithole stinking up the neighborhood.
I agree with you on not needing another ugly luxury condo but that I don't know that we really NEED another crappy pizza place either.
Jon, I rarely eat pizza (and when I do, I go to Muzzarella), but people really loved Pete's-a-Place, it was a neighborhood institution.
There is no denying we need Stuyvesant Grocery back, though. Love the guys who run the little deli on A b/t 13th and 14th, but it just can't compare to what Stuyvesant offered. I need my damn flowers already!
wow, that looks pretty bad! though, good to hear that Petes-a-Place will be returning.
My prediction and you can't talk me out of it: There is no way in our tiny little lifetimes that this isn't going to get built up with big window condos, a minimum of 8 stories. There will be an organic hamburger restaurant, a sports bar and a nightclub in the retail spaces. They are doing zero work because they are working out their funding. I am sure of this. Even though I have no actual proof or knowledge beyond my vivid imagination.
The manager of Pete's-A-Place told me they were projecting to reopen in October 2011. But he told me this LAST SUMMER. I don't know what's up with this site now. There's a rumor going around that NYU bought this site and the former Strauss store site at 14th Street & Ave C, and is building dorms. But rumors like that always abound regarding vacant/developable sites. When I checked the land records a few days ago, no deed to NYU (or anyone else recently) for either of these sites has been recorded yet.
