Coyote Ugly is gearing up for its 20th anniversary on Jan. 26. Per the Coyote Ugly website:
This anniversary is extra special and will be the best ever! Open to the public at 4pm! Private party 2-4pm for our regulars from the first 10 years.
Don't think I know anyone who was (or is) a regular here at the bar at 153 First Ave. between East Ninth and East 10th Street... was only here once myself.
Anyway, per the sign out front, Coyote Ugly founder Liliana Lovell will be at the bash ... you can read the bar's history here. There are 13 Coyote Ugly bars in the United States now... and a few more overseas... (A Coyote Ugly opened in Constanta, Romania, on Oct. 11, and Coyote Ugly Saloon opened in Novosibirsk, Russia, on Oct. 3. There are four other locations in Russia.)
Meanwhile, a reader said that the bar was closed part of last week. Not sure what happened. (It was NOT related to the DOH, though that was an issue in the past.)
Finally the NY bar is up and running!! OK that is a load off my shoulders. It doesn’t matter how old you are but... bit.ly/VnOcUr

What do you get for a bar on its 20th birthday?

20 years of proving that not everything old is good.
"I had perfected my bar and Coyote Ugly Saloon quickly established itself in the hearts of New Yorkers as their preeminent drinking establishment."
When did Coyote Ugly go from being your average nasty East Village bar (like Mars Bar) to the completely-fucked tourist trap it is now? Was it the movie or had that already happened before?
There was once in that spot a delightful gay bar called The Last Resort - I think it was there from around 1980-1986. Great conversations at the bar, an eclectic mix of real LES people, some actors, drag queens, political activists, and a great bar staff.
Anyone else remember The last resort?

A good neighborhood bar? You get it a sizable tab.
Coyote Ugly? I don't know...a disdainful passing glance?
We used to pop our heads in there occasionally in the early days and there was never anyone in there.
Ha. This place proves my point exactly. This place was ofennsive to the old timers when it went up, had a dumb movie to promote it and now it's considered some sort of neighborhood stalwart? Welcome to the EV, where reality is distorted by idiots.
I must be getting old, as I remember THIS place opening as the death knell of the neighborhood...
20 years of no peace for its neighbors. The management has been consistently non-cooperative and non-caring about its neighbors since year one. Noise, sidewalk blocking, fights, vomit, urine, vandalism and attitude.
I would toast its departure.
I went there once after the movie... I haven't been back...
it's a frathole
On its 20th anniversary I will wish for its demise with all my might as I do everyday.
I was there in it's opening days, a bud of mine dated Lil. It was a hole just like any other EV bar with $2 PBRs in a can, it was a real crap hole but it was authentic. It's a sad thing that it's such a tourist trap now, doubt it resembles the original at all.
