In recent years, this corner has been a gathering spot in the summer-fall for travelers/crusties. In October 2018 (pre-sidewalk bridge), for instance, the NYPD set up a light tower here to deter anyone from congregating and camping out.
People have been living under here in recent months as well, capturing the ire of the Post.
Thanks to Steven for the photos... and thanks to Alex R. for the tip!

Butt ugly.
Finally - these sidewalk sheds are awful. City should implement mandatory high grade netting instead. I avoid them as much as possible, one reason it's great to have a mask, the smells are putrid !
What med students and doctors do is put peppermint or other essential oils on the outside—never the inside—of their mask, for when they're examining—or cutting into—stinky people.
Flower Power on 9th street has a blended oil they call "Thieves' Oil" after the grave robbers who used to break into graves and steal treasures people might have been buried with. It's a heady blend, redolent with cloves.
I wonder when the one on e 6th between b and c will be gone, the building is built and the thing has been up lookin like some sort of curbside restaurant shack for what seems like 5 years!
